Default Part 135 Internship! Need some honest opinions!

I have recently come across a Part 135 internship that duties include helping with unloading and loading of passengers and cargo, flying SIC in a King Air, as well as various odd jobs. This internship is 9 months to a year and will require a $3000 investment for partial training costs. I have alot of interest in Part 135 or Part 91 in the future and think this would be a great opportunity to get some SIC turbine time but I have a few questions:

1) Is it foolish to pay for the training or is that standard procedure with these types of internships?
2) Would I be stepping on some toes by taking paid pilot positions away, by doing the same thing for experience instead of getting paid?
3) How valuable would this experience be compared to spending the 9 months or a year instructing and working on my CFII and MEI and graduating early?

"is that standard procedure with these types of internships?"

I've never heard of this sort of thing before, so it's hard to say what's standard. Based on the little you told us, I'd say this has hi scam potential.

Instructing is a great way to gain experience, build your self confidence, improve your resume, and become a better pilot.

I have never heard of an internship like this before either that is why I have so many concerns. The information I was given was very vaue which worries me even more and I am having a difficult time contacting someone that can give me some straight answers. This may be an indication of the "scam potential" but needless to say I will try to get some more background.

I'd have to agree with the above post.

Besides the way things are right now it's not going to take a lot in order for to get the time you need on your own. At the lower end of the industry "everybody" is hiring.

I instructed for a year and enjoyed it! I learned a lot, met a lot interesting people.

The pay for training also leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Internships are either for a no-pay basis, or you get paid. You should never.......ever.....pay for an internship!!!!

No way would I pay for that. I know turbine time gets you salivating, but you're setting a bad precedent for yourself and others.

If you can find more info. on it, groovinaviator had an internship with Raytheon. Ask him for the details. It sounds like an awesome internship though. If I could take it or I was competitive enough to get it, I'd jump all over it.

I must say, in this day of GoJet, and Gulfstream and other things - it is refreshing that you are asking these questions instead of simply jumping at the chance. Also, it seems that you are asking the right questions.

I have heard of the Raytheon internship and it does sound like a pretty cool gig and great experience, unfortunatley, I did not meet the requirements at that time. I am going to stick to instructing and see what my options are when the Raytheon internship comes around next fall. Thanks for all the info it is much appreciated. Getting honest and serious responses are not always the easiest on APC. Thanks again.

There are other jobs out there besides the intern you mentioned and as a cfi. I risked my life everyday flying cessnas(206/7 and 402) during the hot days in vegas to the grand canyon to build flight time. On my interview, they asked more of my experience flying the canyon than turbine time! The name of the game is spend the least amount of money to gain valuable experience learning this craft called aviation.

good luck
