Being a professional pilot is about managing risk not always running from it. In the end it is about getting the job done. Too timid and they give your job away. To aggressive and you will crash. Not all that easy.

If I felt like I were "pushing margins every day" I wouldn't do this for a living.

Some pilots are oblivious to the frequent peril that they get themselves into. Others can be overly sensitive and do not want to stick their neck out at all. As always the middle ground is best. Be aware of the hazards and careful to manage the risks associated.

RE: AMF Metro's having FO's. If they had there would be a good chance the captain and the FO would still be employed, the aircraft still producing revenue, and a runway not closed down for however long it was.

Agreed - but I have heard of two person crews still landing gear up or having other problems that you *think* would have been averted with that extra pair of eyes and another brain in the cockpit

Sad situation all the way around.

A buddy interviewed at ERA Alaska last week, and that's exactly what they expect you to do with WX, MX, push the limits, and bend them until they fit. Starting pay at ERA? $12K, Beech 02 F/O or C-206/7 PIC. My buddy was very much all set.

Although the truth of the matter is to be found in this thread if you look hard enough, all this second-guessing doesn't benefit anyone.
