Divert one time too many and they will give the job to someone else. Professional pilots have to push the margins everyday. Most of the time it does not result in an accident...most of the time.
Being a professional pilot is about managing risk not always running from it. In the end it is about getting the job done. Too timid and they give your job away. To aggressive and you will crash. Not all that easy.

RE: AMF Metro's having FO's. If they had there would be a good chance the captain and the FO would still be employed, the aircraft still producing revenue, and a runway not closed down for however long it was.

A buddy interviewed at ERA Alaska last week, and that's exactly what they expect you to do with WX, MX, push the limits, and bend them until they fit. Starting pay at ERA? $12K, Beech 02 F/O or C-206/7 PIC. My buddy was very much all set.

Although the truth of the matter is to be found in this thread if you look hard enough, all this second-guessing doesn't benefit anyone.
