write up: "R/H prop shaft oil leak"
Response: Well, theres a leak for sure but there is over 3 gallons of oil in the engine so it should be fine to fly out and back. But if you dont want to thats ok, its just a another service failure from an aircraft you downed.

In the end, you still grounded the flight. They had to respect that, even if it did mean failed service (or in this case, a 4 hour delay for a rescue flight).

There's two sides to this story. There's been a lot of grounded planes in this particular base, and it has been noted as "poor performance" to outsiders, but if you look at the big picture, the pilots are doing the right thing by not flying unsafe aircraft. It is in no way the "status quo" at that base to fly aircraft in an illegal or dangerous condition.

I don't mean disrespect Utedrummer, or take the side of MX in this instance, but I can see more to this story than the tid bit posted.

Respect is a pretty strong word. I think the flight department "expects" you to do the right thing, will respect and back you for the decisions you make. It's a leap of faith that the others will respect you for those same decisions.

Obviously you know me (from my background offered and the senerios given anyone at SLC could figure it out). I hope you didnt join just to put in your .02 about my post .

Yes, there are two sides to the story and a whole lot more going on in the SLC MX dept. right now (and over the past few weeks) that hasnt been shared. This thread however is not about AMF MX but rather AMF vs 121 and I gave my opinion on the matter, which is 121 is a better choice. MY PERSONAL SITUATION brought me to AMF over 121. If things had been different FOR ME I would never have taken an AMF 99 over a CRJ. I have never made any secret of this. Everyone has their own situations and reasons for being at AMF and if that is right for them then I think thats great. I was simply stateing ONE reason why I would recommend 121 over AMF (which is what the origional poster was asking for). IMHO for most people flying a BE99 at AMF to get TPIC is not worth the risk (via MX, or sigle pilot IFR or the hours/lifestyle etc) over 121. AMF is a quick way to get your certificate violated.

A BE99 doesnt mean anything to Netjets or the Majors (TPIC yes but waaaay to small....needs to be 12,500+ for anyone to care). Yes you can move into the 1900 (still, nobody really cares about a 1900 especially now that you have BigSky pilots out fighting you for that next job) or even the Metro (which many pilots even at AMF will tell you shouldnt be operated single pilot). The vast majority of regionals right now have an upgrade time under 24months (much sooner if you have the time due to the 400hr piltos not eligible to upgrade that fast). You WILL log more time in 121, you WILL log better time 121 (bigger a/c), you WILL be in safer a/c due to MX in 121 (except mabye Mesa), you WILL be in a safer environment 121 (2 pilot, tighter regs), you WILL get better flight benefits at 121, etc etc etc. Really I could on and on. Bottom line, unless something special bring you to AMF I will and do recommend anyone and everyone takes 121 over AMF and what is listed above are the reasons why. Having done both I feel I can give an informed opinion.

To be unbiased: AMF was the most enjoyable flying I have done in a while because I didnt have PAX in the back getting upset over turbulence and bank angles. It was nice to hand fly a plane again and during the late summer when the sun was still up during flights it was some of the most beautiful flying I have done (FL's are fun but 121 goes too high to really appreciate the beauty of flight). My pilot abilities were utilized and required to fly on some days which was fun (121 utilizes the airplanes flying abilities, not yours). For these reasons I will never regret flying for AMF, but no, now thats done I am glad not to go back. Sorry guys.

Own Nav, Im not sure who you are and I hope you dont take this to think I didnt enjoy my time there or that I think you guys shouldnt be there or whatever. Just my opinion, which I never kept to myself. No hard feelings.

Utedrummer, again, no disrespect, and yes, you do know me. You seemed to imply that issue was maintenance standards, they may have felt there was a pilot attitude issue there. I just wanted to clarify.

I personally feel that our local managment has their work cut out for them, and I don't want it to go unnoticed that they're busting their butts to make things better.

Good luck with your future endeavors. I'm sure, like you said, part 135 freight isn't for everyone.

.
Hmmm, little confused about that one...? MX felt the pilots had an attitude problem?? or something else?

I agree, RG and CD are doing the best they can and they both deserve much more for what they have done. I think highly of both of them and would jump at the chance to work with either one again (but not under AMF)

Good luck with your future endeavors. I'm sure, like you said, part 135 freight isn't for everyone.
Thanks, I already have the next great thing lined up and ready to go, beautiful 121 job in the latest and greatest of jets. Just my cup of tea.

As the situation has drastically changed in the last 6 months, now would you recommend AMF to a regional guy with several thousand SIC in CRJs, no TPIC, and no upgrade in sight?

We are having an RJ captain from Mesa in our next indoc class to go fly a PA31 in Texas. He will be closer to his family, where at Mesa from what I understand he was no where close to them. It is hard to beat being home every night with weekends off.

Uh, Texas PA31, sure that isn't outstation based? Which, of course appeals to many also, just flip the schedule so you're home all day and gone 5 nights.

Normally, I'd say a chieftain outstation is a bad move, but given the situation, you're going to be in a chieftain for a while anyway now days. If you like the outstation schedule, go for it.
