Single Piston Part 135
Hi all, I just had a quick question: Why don't you see more single piston part 135 aircrafts (similar to the Piper Mirage)? I know some operators charter Cirrus SR 22 planes, but I haven't heard of many.

My guess would be that there isn't much of a market for it. I mean, what are you going to market it towards?

Payload, speed, safety.

true they are not very common, i fly for a VFR only single engine 135 outfit. we get a handful of charters but not a ton. kind of hit or miss. we fly 2 172s and a 182. our main business is flight training and rentals, fire watch in the summer. its kind a random range of customers for charters from lawyers who need to give a quick deposition half way across the state or some golfers over to the coast for the weekend.... random stuff.

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm planning on purchasing a mirage and want to lease it out to an aircraft management company, but don't know of any that charters single pistons. I feel like they would be decent for short flights.

Quick answer, I''m fairly certain that 14 CFR Part 135 (carrying revenue passengers) prohibits Single Engine IFR with non-turbine powered aircraft. I don't have the exact rule handy, but Part 135 speaks to a requirement for an approved engine monitoring program. Oil analysis and compression checks don't suffice... 135 requires a higher level of safety when carrying passengers under IFR.
135 Cargo only is OK for SE piston under IFR... |
Because the only airplane that's of any use for that (in large numbers) is a 207, and Alaska doesn't need any more at the moment.

Hi FO123,
I think your looking for the small corner of a very niche market. Very hard to charter because of the (I think) day VFR only rule for 135 ops. Maybe a lease back to a rental outfit. I have no experience in the Mirrage but it seems like a very capable airplane for private travel. Curious what part of the country you are looking to base it in. In the summer time there would be some market for it in the NE. Going from HPN or TEB to HTO, MVY or ACK. But there is a ton of competition in those markets. Best of luck! |
