Default 5 Year Plan

WFolks,

Looking for some input. I am current military and another 6 years until retirement and I intend to stay until 20. I currently have about 2700 hours total and about 1500 turbine PIC. I have my ATP and a few type ratings on my ticket.

It will be hard to fly many military hours my last 6 years until retirement. I would imagine I may be able to log around 100 hrs/yr or so, tops.

To make myself competitive to be hired directly into a Part 135 Captains spot, do I need to come up with some other flying? Would it matter if I was giving dual in a Seminole or a Seneca? What if I bought a 172 and flew another 100hrs a year or so? Is that necessary to get hired, or will a bit over 3300 total and 2100 turbine PIC get me into the left seat?

If you were in my shoes, what would you do?

Thanks!

If you're looking to get hired directly into a captain's slot in 121, it ain't happening. You'd have to sit right away for a set amount of hrs (FAA Regs). If you're looking to get hired as a Captain into 135 it's possible. IS-BAO is starting to be the norm in 135 and within IS-BAO standards Capt mins are 4000tt and 2000 PIC for jet aircraft.

If you're looking at a Legacy airline, apply there 1st and regionals 2nd. Checking that 121 box will help.

P8ASW,

IS-BAI and Wyvern Ltd require 4,000TT, 2,000AMEL for a jet PIC. That said, except for some bottom feeders, you are not coming out of the military and going into the left seat of a 135 jet. Two completely different worlds. We recently hired a USAF Guard C17 PIC with 5,500TT 4,000 jet. He is an SIC in the G-IV. Says he's never worked harder or learned more in the 9 months he's been with us.

Just get the time you can and find the job you can when you retire. Just accept it's likely not a 135 JET PIC job, rather an SIC position.

What are your types in and which branch? Six years from now should be the peak of the wave. The fact that you are a military pilot will put you at the top of the applicant stack for 121 carriers.

Piedmont Airlines. Flow to American in 3-5 years. (According to 3 ads right on this page). And I'm sure clicking on the link helps support this site.

BUT... The way I understood his post he is looking for a 135 Captain position, not 121 FO.

When I hear someone specifically looking for 135 jobs, I automatically assume they want the corporate "style" pilot jobs. Of course he may also be interested in airline stuff, but there is no chance to get hired as Captain.

I admit, I didn't really read the whole original post. I was just shocked and delighted to see a company advertising times for upgrade and flow through.
I focused on the title of a five year plan and noticed that these adds matched up.
Just 3 years ago who would have imagined the opportunities. There is an add from Go Jet here mentioning a $10k signing bonus. I know didily squat about these companies but if I was 25 years younger I would be looking into it.

Best,

I have types in the King Air 200, 737-800, and the L-188 (p-3). I have about 850 hours in the 737, 800 of those are PIC.

I am interested in the 135 style flying, though the money of a 121 job is not bad. Seems like 2022 or so is going to be a great time to find a job.

I understand the progression from SIC to PIC in the 121 world, seems like more opportunities for a direct entry to the left seat in the 135 world.

I am hearing that I need to keep building hours where I can and something north of 4000 total makes me competitive?
