Airline Pilot Central Forums - Island Air shuts down

There will be one less option to get to Nantucket next summer as Island Air just shut down operations after decades in service.
It was a sudden announcement and some workers say they didn't get a heads up. It's not a large company, but it will make a difference to a lot of people.
It was an aeronautical life line between Hyannis and Nantucket for 24 years. However, on Friday, tiny Island Air announced quite suddenly that it is closing down operations immediately.
"We were pretty much the only ones that specialized in the Hyannis-Nantucket route," said Ian Brand, a pilot for the airline.
He spoke to FOX25 by phone and said he's been a pilot for Island Air for the past five years. He says in recent weeks, there were rumors of something amiss at the airline, but nothing to indicate the drastic action taken Friday. An action that will mean joblessness just before Christmas for pilots and co-pilots as well as ground and administrative personnel.
"They put their heart and soul into working for this company and they've just been let down by powers outside their control," he said.
Also in for a letdown, says Brand, are the people who relied on Island Air to not only transport them from the mainland to Nantucket, but to transport their goods as well.
"A lot of the construction workers and Islanders who relied on us for transport. You know there's a niche there that needs to be filled. It just needs to be done right," he said.
Brand also says one thing that wasn't done fight, the announcement of the airline's closing. He said he just received a text from the chief pilot, and that was it.
