Default Part 135 to Legacy Airline

I am currently a regional 121 Captain. 5,800 TT 1,700 121 PIC. I was offered a good 135 Captain job on a LJ 45 were I live. It would be better money and more days at home. My question is I eventually want to get to a Legacy/FedEx/UPS. Would making this move hurt me or are a lot of guys with my similar qualifications getting called from the 135/Corporate world? Of the guys getting called from the 135/Corporate world what are your times in comparison? Thanks in advance.

Since you already have the 121 PIC box checked, I don't think it would hurt to broaden your experience.

How realistic is it go from a 135 job to a Major Low Cost Carrier such as Southwest, Frontier, Jet Blue, Allegient, Spirit, Suncountry? I'm currently flying a PC-12 SIC. Will soon be moving to a King Air 350 SIC in just a couple months as well. My plan is to get to 1200TT upgrade to upgrade to captain in the Pilatus, build another 300hrs to get to 1500TT and then upgrade to captain in the King Air 350, with my type and ATP and do about 1 year of that. I'm looking around 2 years from now and I will have my ATP and around 2500 hours of TT, with 2000 turbine, 1500 multi turbine, and 1200 Turbine PIC.

It's very realistic, as many have done it. The only issue would be your TT. Still low compared to the competitive mins.

Do you think in 2 years that it will be low compared to competitive mins? Ive been hearing from a lot of people that mid 2018 is going to be when the majors really start to feel the pilot shortage begin?

I do think that 2500TT will still be considered low compared to competitive mins. You'll have thousands of pilots in 2 years with much more time looking to get hired. BUT, I could be wrong. I'd start throwing my apps/resumes ASAP once you hit the company mins. You never know what can/will happen in this industry....

What's going to hurt you the most is the lack of 121 time. Frontier, Spirit, and Allegiant might take you but still going from a 135 King Air to a 121 A320 is a big step. But things are changing so you never know. Good luck to you.

The saying goes, "if you want to fly for an airline, go fly for an airline."

Not to say that 135 guys/gals don't get picked up by the LCCs/Majors, but statistically speaking it's a much lower percentage. Getting your ATP (lots of regionals willing to pay for that these days), getting TPIC (ideally jet PIC)/more TT, getting 121 experience; all these things will help put you in that higher percentile for getting a call from an airline.

Coming from a guy that jumped straight from 135 to a major, I don't think this move would hurt you. Having TPIC at a 121 carrier will definitely help you, as will 135 TPIC. But I would make sure that it is a "good" Part 135 company, only because a lot of them seem good on the outside but end up being the Wild Wild West when you get in... I guess you have to ask yourself, do you want the known quantity, i.e. Part 121, or something new for the next 5-10 years? There are no guarantees that a LCC or major will call and you certainly don't want to be stuck in a crappy situation for that long.

FWIW, I was hired 3 years ago with 7000TT and 5000TPIC. My buddy walked my resume in back when that was somewhat effective. In my new hire class of 22, there were only 2 of us corporate/135 guys. The rest were military, regional or both.

Good luck!!
