Default Air America Interview

Anyone heading down to KDAB for interviews this week? I didn't think they did their hiring until September/October, but I'll take it. Written/oral/practical gouges you wanna share?

Thumbs down

They will take you on a flight to test your PPL ACS skills and basic instrument approach skills. They will give you a written and then review your answers talking about the ones you got wrong. You will be asked to plan a couple of xc flights in front of them. Unless you're completely incompetent they will hire you.

But beware, this is a very shady outfit. They jerk their pilots around, overwork and abuse them, sometimes don't pay them, and expect them to do borderline unsafe/illegal things. Not every pilot that works for them has this experience, but most do. Also their aircraft are old and worn out and break frequently, which is why they have the nickname "Scare America"

Sounds like a great entry level gig, and it can be, but just beware of what you are getting in to.

Do not sign a contract with them. It is shady, and downright illegal. To say that a pilot is an independent contractor and then be told when and where you are supposed to fly is ridiculous. Also, you are 100% responsible for any damage done to the plane by you or any other persons including acts of god.

I worked for a pictovendor (LAI) and it's most likely going to be a written and a checkflight. It's pretty easy.

I do know that you get payed per flight hour. In survey business that can really bite you in the ass. I was stuck in CMH late fall once and we flew a total of 5 days over the course of 3.5 weeks. So if you're in a similar set up you could really get screwed with your paycheck. Also as far as I remember Air America gives you a per diem that you get to use for a hotel. But I don't think it's that much as their pilots stayed in ****tier hotels that our pilots.

If you're interested in surveying I'd highly recommend Landcare Aviation Inc. They're a great company with good people.

Anyone got a call already if they're being selected for the summer season/hurricane standby?

No call yet. I think one of the guys said they would try to keep us in the loop, but that it would be after the weekend.

One of their planes crashed last week in the mountains at night in IMC and freezing conditions

AAFC in my time, over 4 years ago, was the best Pictometry contractor out there. Guaranteed pay, decent maintenance, and fair mgmt who would work with you. If you ultimately felt unsafe and justified, they didn’t force your hand. It was no Aperture, Williams, or Air Associates, etc. But it’s a good first job for a new commercial pilot. Maybe that’s changed, I know that place is nearly 3x the size now.

Their maintenance dept used to airline-out or contract-out to fix AOGs, as well as frequent inspections. Yes the airplanes weren’t perfect, but that’s at any outfit (a new concept for any young com pilot).

The 1099 part was crappy, hope that changes, but overall a great experience.

Not to disrespect the dead but that doesn't necessarily mean it had anything to do with the company.
