This sounds pretty good. Two questions - do you fly enough cross country during the 18 months for ATP purposes? Second, do you get supplemental training to make sure you do well in class at UAL, which is presumably one's first 121 training event? Thanks.

You train students who go to Lufthansa, but the CPP is for the CFI to go to United, not Lufthansa.

Negative. No opportunity to go to Lufthansa. I can definitely confirm that as they train their pilots from initial screening through.

It is almostcertainly too good to be true. The language explicitly states many requirements, and if I recall correctly after 18 months of being a CFI you will be placed into the CPP pool. So assuming you pass the hogan and interview, and work for a year and a half, you’ll be in the pool. In the meantime you’ll still be at a regional building jet time because others will still be ahead of you in the CPP.

But for what it’s worth, regardless of the CPP, Lufthansa would be a great place to work at. You can’t work there as a fresh CFI but with some dual given under your belt a 500 hours or so, you could instruct at a good program. They’ve been replacing (or maybe are done?) the BE33 bonanzas with SR20s, which beats tired Archers and Cessnas at most schools around here.

Your second paragraph was accurate, however, the first was not. Total time from CFI hiring to sitting in a classroom at UAL is averaging 20 months for the 5 cadets who have already flowed through. Expect to see more advertisements to come from LAT in the near future. And yes all of us new hires at LAT are flying brand sparking new SR 20s with G1000 and autopilot. Not a bad gig

There is a thread in the United Airlines sub-forum on this topic:

CFI to UAL CPP

It is fascinating to read the opinions of current United Airline pilots on this topic.

An important point being made there is the requirement of passing the Hogan psychological test.

It’s a great job, but again don’t get your hopes up on the CPP. Many people apply and don’t pass. It’s a boondoggle at best. Sure, a few people are going to make it. But most wont. Lots of guys at commutair and espressjet and others trying to get the CPP and didn’t make the cut. Or that apply to United and didn’t pass the hogan. And as PT6flyer linked, opinion isn’t great. If you make it, awesome, really. Good for whoever makes it because that’s a huge accomplishment! But I’d also hate to be the guy or girl in their mid-20a who undercut everyone.

This seems to be the key issue here. In theory, if UAL can identify "great pilots" with "great personalities" who are "good enough" to get accepted into a "very select" program, perhaps they should be congratulated. But is this what this is? A very select program where only extremely-qualified pilots are selected?
