CFI at L3 and Phoenix East Aviation
 

Does anywhere here know the CFI situation over at either of these two schools? Are new instructors picking up students quickly?

I recently moved down to Florida with the intention of logging my hours faster than where I was previously living. I'm at a school right now in the Daytona Beach area, and although it is a good school, new CFI's are not logging many hours at all. They are oversaturated with new CFIs. So, this is a bit worrisome for me. So right now I'm just trying to see if anyone has any up to date inside info before I either waste more time or decide to move back to my first school.

From what I'm hearing, many of the 141 schools in the south are overstaffed with CFI's. I've interviewed at 4 different schools in Georgia and Florida and all of them told me I need my CFII to stand out. So if I were in your shoes, I'd find a way to get the CFII done. The 2 schools in Georgia I was told the student to CFI ratio is 2:1, CFII is 6:1.

What's going on, any chance you're at Epic Flight Academy? Planning on starting as a student there this fall and wanted to hear what it's like. If so, is the operation run well and how many hours are CFIs getting per month?

Yeah that’s where I am. I’ve only been here for just under a month now as a CFII student. But from what I’ve seen so far it seems like a pretty good school. The instructors and students seem pretty happy, they have nice facilities and a decent sized fleet.

The one thing I’m still trying to figure out is how many hours a new CFI will get here. I’ve heard different things, but once I pass my CFII i’m going to turn in my resume to the chief flight instructor and ask him directly. But from what I’ve been told (rumor) is that senior instructors seem to do well with hours (80+/m), but I was also told it takes a while for newly hired instructors to get many hours. So I don’t know yet.

Gotcha. Seems like it's a pretty good spot, I enjoyed my time when I visited. Nice planes and well kept from what I've heard. I spoke to one ex-CFI who's with Republic now... he said he spent 11 months there and was averaging between 70-80 every month. Also said that was after he got his CFII so maybe that changes things.

For me, coming from the Northeast I figure averaging that every month is a little better than having to deal with the tough fall and winter months that could be 40-50.

Yeah I think that’s true because a lot of CFIs here told me that it’s smart I’m doing my CFII right now.

I know exactly what you mean. I just moved down here from the Washington DC area literally just to escape our winters. Last year most instructors at my old school averaged 30-40 hours a month because of the strong Xwinds. It should be way better down here in New Smyrna
