If you are an experienced Atlanta-area CFI looking for work, or if you know someone who is, please keep reading.
Quick Overview of Club Environment:
- Flying club with 80-100 members -- not a flight school or FBO
- Members are Georgia Tech students, alumni, and staff -- most have a strong technical background
- Most training is at the primary (Private Pilot) level -- about 5% go on to Instrument training -- no multiengine training
- Student load is variable -- there is often a waiting list during the school year, and open availability during the summer -- student load is not guaranteed
- Fleet consists of four Cessna 172s (3 N/P models, 1 S model)
- Student pays for "clock" time (pre-flight, flight, post-flight, ground training, etc.)
- Student pays CFI directly -- CFI keeps 100% of the instruction fees -- current rate is $30/hour
- CFIs operate as independent contractors -- NO benefits are provided, CFI responsible for taxes, etc.
- CFI is NOT required to be at airport when not training
- CFI is free to instruct non-members at other schools or FBOs
- CFI sets his/her own availability and schedule (but see the weekday availability requirement below)
- CFI is expected to attend at least three of four quarterly CFI meetings each year
- CFIs may rent club airplanes at club rates for proficiency flights (no overnight flights) without paying club membership fees -- current rental rates start at $99/hour wet
- No specific dress code, as long as you're clean and presentable
- 5+ years as a pilot
- 2+ years as a CFI
- 200+ hours Private Pilot dual given (not flight reviews, checkouts, etc.) or 5+ Private Pilot candidates signed off who passed on the first attempt
- Must live in the north metro Atlana area, convenient to FTY
- Must be able to handle at least three (3) full-time primary students (full time = student who flies 2+ days per week)
- Must be able to fly at least three weekdays (Mon-Fri) and one weekend day (Sat-Sun) each week during daylight/business hours
CFI Qualifications - Desired:
- Willing to participate in other club activities -- fly-ins, club meetings, etc. -- club participation is viewed favorably when making student assignments
- Resume screening
- In-person interview and document review with the Chief CFI, and possibly one other club officer
- Short "flight check" by the Chief CFI (at the club's expense) -- applicant will be asked to "teach" a particular topic on the ground and in flight
- Recommendation to the Executive Committee by the Chief CFI
- Approval by vote of the Executive Committee
