UAV Schools
I was looking into jobs and came across UAV Universityshttp://www.uxvuniversity.com/uav-pilot-training-certificate/
and was wondering if anyone has done this and if its worth it. I believe it said the course was $3500 which isnt too bad but would it be worth investing that into flying UAV or spend that towards continuing flying getting my cfi/ii. anyone whose actually attended one of these schools or knows about the demand for uav pilots would help alot. Thanks. |
UAV Schools
Depends. Do you want to fly airplanes or sit at a computer all day?

The guy is selling a "UAV pilot certificate of completion" for $3500 as a self-proclaimed university. What a joke.
1. All the information that he offers is free on the inter-webs if you just search for it. Aside from his BDU-wearing instructors telling you how awesome you are at a local RC park, there is no value. 2. His university isn't accredited through any organization that matters. 3. The FAA hasn't issued any guidelines, regs, or "PTS" for drone jockeys. Aside form the AC that says, "under 55lbs, below 400', no commercial applications" there simply isn't anything official. So what standard is this guy training to? Stay away, stay far away. |
No, not worth it. You'll get all the training you need at any company that hires you.

There are very few UAV jobs for civilians that military guys can't snap up in droves.
They make them easy to use for law enforcement so advanced training isn't required. |
From that uh...'university' website:
As soon as payment is received, we will ship a simulator to you in the mail. The simulator consists of software and a controller that plugs into the computer USB port. After you install the software you will be able to fly 47 different small UAVs from 6 different sites. See link, and click on "Aircraft & Flying sites": RealFlight® Basic R/C Flight Simulator That's some high-quality training my friends. |
You could buy a really nice R/C plane ("drone") for $3500 and teach yourself. From the looks of the video on their site, they'll teach you to fly drones using a $299 toy...do you really think you'll get much out of their program that you couldn't get by going to your local flying field? And you'd be $3200 ahead.

I've got two UAV type ratings and can promise you that $3500 is better spent on hookers and blow.

Yes, the private companies that train you issue you certificates of completion and instructor endorsements just as if you got typed in a Citation.

Being ahead of the curve is one thing. To say that types are being issued in the context of this forum (meaning the FAA is issuing UAV type ratings) is another and did not mke sense. Thanks for the clarification. |

Thanks for the clarification. They're already requiring that operators applying for COA's in the NAS have staffed commercial pilots and that observers all have Class II medicals. |
