It's even in the book. "Use the PREV function to capture the ILS course while still using FMS as the active NAV source".
If CA manually flips to green needles 25nm out, well, that's his call. It's just kinda pointless.
Also, in FM1, "APPROACH mode should not be selected until the aircraft is within the ILS service volume (approximately 18 NM of the threshold)".
And yes, I've been to ORD, nothing there prevents you from flying it correctly. Main point being - don't go green 25 miles out. The signal and obstacle clearance is not guaranteed, and it's sort of against the book too.

Woof.

I have my FO’s join in pink on long finals in CLT all the time. They all act like I’m making up ILS service volumes.

That's the way to do it. If your FO complains, ask what AIM 1-1-9 says about it.
Knowing what the book says seems to be an unpopular thing here.

not to put a damper on your day, but any body else hear that aa won’t have any new hire classes in the fall. Heard it from envoy and psa so it must be true.

Sounds plausible with the s80 sundown and displacements/retraining from that fleet...

With the S80, 190, 330 and 75/76 going away in the next several years it’s highly possible that folks waiting to flow could see around 12-24 months added to their flow timeline as AA intermittently shuts down new hire classes to deal with fleet transitions.

I saw the director of training changed their estimate of new hires for 2019 to include a reduction, maybe that’s where this is coming from? Apparently they did the same thing last year, but ended up hiring more than the originally projected number. Who knows, maybe they aim low so when they do better it’s a positive surprise

United, Delta, SWA, FedEx, UPS are all hiring... the prospect of getting stuck at PDT longer should motivate folks to at least apply elsewhere.

Exactly. More reason for people to apply elsewhere.
