Payback? Ha, maybe! I think there was a big thing a while back about how these never stand up in court. Who knows, I ain’t smart enough to be a lawyer.
Yeah, DCA will be interesting for many. Luckily, we have dash folk like me and many others who did DCA often. Also, we have a lot of guys from other airlines here now like AW that have plenty of experience being based there. Yes, we have to brief these well and make sure each person in the cockpit is on the same page. It’s really not hard, but you have to be careful. The hard part for me will be the new commuter world. I was in DCA a few weeks ago and saw the new construction. Will be better than the 35X days with the van! Almost charlottesque now. Ha

Yeah I've done it plenty too, used to love the CRW overnights out of there (even with the creepy Pullman Plaza!). Always flew with great guys, and made some of my fondest memories here at PDT. Can't beat the Chinese steamed breakfast buns!
I was talking more specifically about using a different climb procedure. It's not big deal at all, but compounded with new and complicated airspace for a new FO and it will be interesting to say the least

Basically if you signed a promissory note that you would pay back a signing bonus should you leave, it would be voided by many states in many courts.
If you signed a note that the pay was a training contract, or upfront pay (pay in advance) that's a different story, but you have the CBA, and there is no language in the cba about that other than the word bonus for new hires. Separation from the company is defined in the cba and employee handbook. Promissory notes and training contracts are against the cba. Bonuses are bonuses, and usually fall under the same category as gifts.
In order to collect the money, piedmont would have to go through a debt collection agency and follow the FCRA, that's a pretty big hill top to climb. A debt collector would probably fold immediately when challenged. They might try to make an example out of the first few to discourage the others from leaving.
I would talk to a good employment lawyer and spend 200 dollars for an hour of their time prior to resigning so you know your options. PA or NC law and possibly MD law would govern.
