Where to live in or around Philly
#21
I'm debating with the thought of commuting to PHL vs living there as well. Currently living in ROA flying the Dash, so it's great right now, but the Dash being under a year remaining till it's gone and a seemingly negligible chance for a base announcement anytime soon, I'm faced with this dilemma. I have family in CLT and in general would rather live in the CLT area vs the PHL area but I love being home-based.
How are the costs of living in the areas/neighboring towns around PHL? I'm guessing a bit more expensive than being down south? The jet lines do appear commutable from CLT so that really is playing into my though process too.

Never came close to a half hour, if you hit it at the worst time I've waited about 15 minutes and it's less than 10 to F but I've also parked and been at F in less than 10 minutes, I definitely wouldn't say it's an average of 30 minutes from parking to the terminal in my experience.
I'm slow.. very slow.. I put 30 minutes in my time to get to the airport.. and usually I'm right on time

You can pretty much get a good cheesesteak at any pizza shop. Also I would steer well clear of Darby or Collingdale. You can find much better in Essington. It's not pretty but the people are nice and for the same money or a little more and it's 10 times safer. I got pulled over in Darby because I guess I looked like someone who buys drugs.

If your single... old city, fishtown, anywhere on southstreet, Penn's landing.. They can be pricy but you can find a studio for less than a thousand.. no car needed you'll save money there. You'll have the best time of your life.... invite me😁
Fishtown is where all the young millenials are.. lots of fun.. and there is the infamous "barcade" there.. there is an awesome apartment complex that's in an old brewery. Can't remember the name but that's what I would do..
There is mass transit to the airport or a less than 15 dollar uber ride.
I would spend a day.. get some good walking shoes.. and walk through all those neighborhoods.. philly is easily walkable.. start south street.. And head northeast.. see the rocky steps 🤠
If you want cheaper outside of city but close to work decent neighborhood.. Swarthmore..
Not as nice but close to work.. this will be much cheaper.. beholden, collingdale, and darby.. there are still some old school neighborhoods there but be cautious walking in spots.
There is also essington.. which has several generations of people that lived in that area.. you go to the irish pub and everyone knows eachother.. it consists of blue collar workers that are long shoreman, workers at the Boeing plant and others that work at the coal power plant.. also there are several crash pads there.. commute to the airport is a snap.. but your fun factor will be limited.
Feel free to pm me if you need any help.

Looking to start planning the Philly transition. Schools aren’t a factor but looking for a safe/decent, affordable neighborhood that’s dog friendly (a dog park nearby would be ideal) has some restaurants and bars and allows easy access to PHL and TTN airports, but doesn’t have to be equidistant between the two.
Any suggestions?

Household has 3 cars/suv a motorcycle and a 110lb lab mix so something that allows for outdoor space and off street parking for at least one of the vehicles and the bike. If that’s the burbs then an area that can we can use train/metro etc to get into the city. Ideally within 45min to PHL and a safe neighborhood.

In terms of suburbs, Media is an awesome little town. Small main street feel, great food and bars, plenty of green space. about 15 minutes from the airport.
West Chester is another good option. Bigger downtown than media (probably about 25 restaurants) and would have more green space near by, if you're interested in trails through the woods/fields. Plenty of protected nature areas.
Downingtown is just north of West Chester, doesn't have nearly as cool of a mainstreet, but is home of victory brewing. Beer!
Any of the towns on the "mainline" are going to be nice (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philadelphia_Main_Line). Can get pricey but depends where you look.
Plenty of options, let me know if you have any specifics you wanna ask about. Grew up and still live here, so I'm fairly familiar with most towns around PHL
