BPPV (Vertigo)
 

Anyone have any experience with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) and renewing their medical? Had a brief 1-time episode, diagnosed by 3 ENTs and treated and wondering how long I can expect to be without a medical and any advice on how to proceed before seeing the AME?

What caused it?

1 ear was found to be clogged up and apparently certain head movements triggered it. Had an mri which was clear. All other tests came back clear as well.

Yeah no big deal medically speaking. I know a few guys who have had it. As long as a doc signs you off and you don't have any symptoms it should be fine.

I know one guy who had the inner ear crystals knocked loose and that caused it. A simple epley manuver fixed it quickly (Google it).

Another guy I know got it and they think some sort of virus attacked one of his vestibular nerves and that took a few months of physical therapy and some medication to fix, retraining the brain to deal with conflicting inputs.


The docs have to look and make sure it is nothing serious like a tumor or anuerism, etc... but once they rule the big stuff out it's usually not too hard to fix.

Some conditions may have several possible causes or exhibit multiple symptomatology. Episodic disorders of dizziness or disequilibrium require careful evaluation and consideration by the FAA. Transient processes, such as those associated with acute labyrinthitis or benign positional vertigo may not disqualify an applicant when fully recovered. Get copies of all the treatment records and if possible a statement from your treating ENT or neurologist that it was BPPV, is now resolved, and without residual.

That should let you get it through with only the unavoidable bureaucratic delay.
