PTSD and Class II Cert

Hello everyone

This is my first post. I am registered for fall classes, at a local college, for "Professional Pilot." I received a call today saying I need to complete my medical evaluation before classes start. I have to get a class II cert. That being said, I have been looking over some things pertaining to mental health and the FAA. There doesnt seem to be a line in sand drawn when it comes to veterans with PTSD. In my case, I have PTSD however I am not on medication and pose no threat to me or anyone else. I'm curious if anyone here has experience with this or is a AME and could give me some clarification. Thanks in advance!

It all depends

If you were diagnosed as PTSD and it was entered in as a placeholder with 0% disability in case that it flared up in the future, no problem. If you listened to the guys who told you ‘here’s what to say to get 50% VA disability’ and were actually awarded 50% disability, you may we’ll have screwed yourself. If the latter, you will at a minimum be out thousands of dollars in psych interviews and neurocognitive testing and wait weeks to months for a final decision, which may not be favorable.

The only thing worse would be to not admit to getting the disability from the FAA. Pilots have been hammered for trying to conceal that and the FAA does have access to that data.

Thanks for the reply. I was dealing with some stuff when I first got out so they slapped that label on me and others like me. They put me at 30%. That was 6 years ago. I disclosed the disability on the medical application.

Get all the treatment records - including current if you are seeing anyone at the VA. If it becomes an issue, there are AMEs that are good at this you can go to. That doesn’t sound like a showstopper but you’ll probable need to see someone to cover the FAAs butt, unless you got written a particularly good note ending your treatment.

Gonna be tough. Mental health is a hot button due to German wings.

You need a first class, assuming you want to make anything resembling a living as a pilot. You really need to get an unrestricted first class before you spend any money on training.

Thanks for input. I just requested my medical records from my local VA office. I'll make my appointment with the AME after that and see what he says. What's the difference between the different class certs?

Class 3 is basically private pilot, not for hire. Class 2 allows you to do commercial flying when you get your commercial. Class 1 is for airline captains. But the criteria for a class 1 doesn’t differ much from class 2, so it woukd be worth getting the class 1 just to know you can.

You'll need a 1C to get hired at almost any decent job, including the better corporate jobs last I heard.

Once hired, if you lose the 1C but can still hold a 2C, you can keep flying as an FO/co-pilot. Maybe even PIC in non-airline operations.

The standards are very similar, 2C is really a consolation prize if they can't quite bring themselves to give you a 1C.

Certainly the top 50% of corporate jobs. International operations all require a 1C and full type rating on an ATP.
