Personally I would do AMAS but my union covers that. I would (and have) paid for it myself in the past.
Main reason is that you can have a candid conversation with them without possibly digging a deeper-than-necessary hole for yourself.
AOPA would be a fine place to start too.
I'm not hard over against the FAA but fundamentally they have a slightly different equity and outlook than you do.
