Income During Deferral

It appears my medical is going to be deferred for a few months. I’d prefer, as much as possible, not to draw my savings down. Any ideas on what to do while awaiting medical clearance to fly?

No short-term disability or loss of license coverage? Bummer....

Training Department?
Uber/Lyft Driver?
Substitute teaching K-12?

Flight schools may be strapped for help. You could do ground instruction or possibly flight instruction for rated pilots who need a FR or CPL/CFI certs. You don't need a medical if the student is rated and current in the plane (he obviously needs a medical in this case).

Thanks for the ideas!

Also, for the future you might want to check with Harvey Watt for a loss of medical plan:

Harvey Watt | Pilot Life & Disability Insurance, Medical Certification

I have one the Union at NetJets arranged and it's going to keep me from having to work as the greeter at Walmart ;-)

I have 30+ years in airline flying. Have used my short term disability insurance 3 times. Premiums are expensive, but well worth it!

I've used my company provided short term disability several times over the years when changing medications and finally had to change to a medication I can't fly with. I'll soon transition from company provided LTD to the Harvey Watt plan my union sponsored.

Monthly premiums were over $300 but it's well worth it because now I'll have an income more or less equal to what a SIC at my company would make. And I'll have it until a few years past my normal SS retirement age. Had I been younger when I quit flying I'd have it until normal SS retirement age. Well worth the $$$$, and the money is tax free unless you deducted the premiums from your taxes. Without this Loss of Medical plan I'd be greeter at WalMart or else having to start burning my 401k years sooner.
