Default Medical w/ past drug history

9.5 years ago had a felony drug trafficking case (counterfitting of a controlled substance). It was expunged 2 years after it happened however I also had a small marijuana possession charge a few months before the expungement. Fast forward 8 years and I haven't had so much as a traffic ticket. Can anyone point me in the right direction of whom I can go talk to with regard to all of the hoops I will need to go through in order to obtain a third class medical? I've spoke to two people so far and everyone told me to give up that I don't stand a shot.

Thanks in advance

If you join AOPA they have a legal service plan which might provide some info.

May be better to just use an aviation medicine consulting firm... they deal with this sort of thing routinely. AMAS is a popular one, and there are others.

Sport Pilot doesn’t require a medical.
At least as long as you’ve never been denied one.
Just putting it out there.

Medical, most likely. Top tier airline, extremely doubtful. You’d have the slightest glimmer of hope with the first charge, but the fact you didn’t even make it two years before another is no good.

Contact a HIMS AME and explain your situation. They are the experts here. If you’d like to contact an aviation attorney first, feel free.

The only advice I can give is this: tell the entire truth. Pilots have been arrested and charged with federal crimes for lying (by omission) on the 8500. The FAA can work with honesty, even in some pretty damn bad situations. They will not entertain a lack of candor.

Personally, I think a third class is very doable—you may need to jump through some big hoops, though.

Definitely talk to a HIMS AME, they are the most knowledgeable about these situations. If you live on the east coast I know a great guy in Columbia SC.

Yes it can be done. I have a special issuance for a past felony conviction and just recently got my 1st class medical. I got an eval from both an aviation psychiatrist and an aviation psychologist. I had a group called Pilot Medical Solutions represent me and they put it all together and eventually it all worked out. I spent about 7000 bucks altogether but it was important to me. So yes it can be done if you have the wherewithal and tenacity. Good luck.

I know this thread was started 3 yrs ago, but, the HIMS process is the same whether you're seeking 1st, 2nd or 3rd class. There's no differentiation. Either you're medically certified or you're not! Trust me....I know.
