Default Cavernous Malformation Special Issuance

Has anyone gone through the process of getting an incidental finding of a CM approved by OKC? ALPA medical is submitting my case to the FAA for approval, just wondering what the odds are going through this process.

Please update if you receive any feedback or further information on your medical.

I was diagnosed with a cavernous malformation after a concussion and am considering a career change to pilot. I can only find the one case of a naval operator but no information about the condition for civilian aviators.

I'm still waiting on official word back from the FAA on my request for a special issuance on this. Hopefully I will hear something in the next month. The Doctor I've been working with to present my case to the FAA told me that they have seen successful SI for cavernous malformations but its a case by case basis. There are a lot of tests that I had to go through which the Doctor said the FAA is going to want to see. You may have already went through these. There are also recommendations from Neurologist and Epileptologist that they are going to want to read to what extent that the CA could cause sudden incapacitation. My recommendation, as you'll need a medical to start training anyway, is to get started working with an AME and apply for a SI with them. If you get approved them you'll be good to go.

Great, thank you for taking the time to outline this for me. Really appreciate it as I could find so little about it. Good luck with your process and hope you’re approved soon.
