Yeah if they were going to use BMI, it would have to be rope-and-choke screen by the AME, and if you didn't pass that go to a tank for an accurate measurement.

I wish the Navy would do that. I had been leery dropping below 265 before because 265 to about 235 is no man's land where by any scientific measurement I am under 22% (the old standard) but I fail rope and choke.

You actually have an inspiring story. I also think that BMI, while certainly a factor in an overall equation, isn't the be all and end all.

No problem. When captains would see me dieting, I'd get the "you're not that big" and most people thought I was 240-250 when I was 300.

I'm 6'4" and built like a linebacker.

Some frogmen would fail the tape due to mass in the wrong places. Big Navy quietly allowed DMO's to waive those with an eyeball reality check. Lots of those guys can't pass the height/weight.

Not for Aviators. When I was in HSL our CO instituted a pilots/ swimmers don't rope and choke policy.

Lots of us taking insane amounts of diuretics, sitting in saunas to an unhealthy level if dehydration, etc.

BMI is a poor indicator.
I go to the gym all the time ( before this anyway) and I’m heavy for my height.
210 at 5’10
Theres no way you should hold a First Class medical though if you need 5 min recovery time after you’ve walked down a jet bridge and shoehorned yourself in the seat.
Or can’t get to the back row of the crew van.

I’m going to put a plug in for Dr Rhonda Patrick PhD. She’s a clinical researcher and runs a website and YouTube channel called Found My Fitness. She drops tons of knowledge for free on all sorts of subjects that are relevant here. Intermittent fasting, time restricted eating, gut health, antioxidants, cancer prevention, sauna use and heat shock proteins, and recently she has posted some very good articles on Covid involving Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Melatonin, and sauna use.

She’s on Joe Rogan a lot and there are multiple video clips with her on Joe Rogan on YouTube discussing many of the above subjects. I will warn you in advance, Dr Rhonda is somewhat of a rabbit hole. One thing leads to another and the next thing you know, three hours have passed but you are a whole lot smarter when it comes to nutrition and your health.

I am low carb but not keto and mostly paleo and I try to do time restricted eating...no calories after 6 pm and go at least 12 hours before eating again and usually go 14. I lost 25 lbs in about 6 months and am where I was in high school for weight at 6’2” and 170lbs. I try to do a three day water, green tea, black coffee only fast about once per quarter. That is to promote autophagy which cleans out the zombie senescent cells, and does some other things to strengthen the immune system. Four years ago, I was 230 in the winter and 210 in the summer and riding 3,000-4,000 miles per year on the road bicycle. A ketogenic diet got me down to 195-200 range, but time restricted eating took off more weight on same calories and less riding....@1,000-1,500 per year.

In your 50s when your metabolism is A LOT slower than someone in their 20s-40s even.

Thank you. The “slowing metabolism” myth is real.
Lose the love affair with food and most people will be fine.

HGH and testosterone are sometimes kissing cousins, one triggers the other.
My HIITs boost T, which boost fat burn/metabolism.

Couple that with IF and OMAD....
