Also a word of the wise...I contacted AOPA (usually a very trusted source) and asked about the forms needed (before you got back to me Dan :D) and the medical person told me to issue a letter to the FAA and get an LOE. My point is this is not up to date information, so if anyone hears one thing get it backed up by another professional.

Any luck (or updates) on that dvorine test?

So if you already took the light gun test are you gradfathered in or not. I just got my 1st class medical 2 weeks ago. They had no idea anything had changed. Peace out.

Yeah...didn't pass it by FAA standards....missed it by one..so I got seven incorrect, which means I could be a little more deficient then I thought. This whole process is a major disappointment.

I saw you on the AOPA forums and the Dvorine is the next golden child. Does that mean this will evetually be the only test allowed? Anyway, the optometrist gave me a list of all the answers for the second edition and the ones I got wrong...looks like the only reward I will get for being an honest person is a 2nd class medical and no options for a 1st....haha.

I'm willing to bet that 1 more wrong than allowed is still an extremely minor case. Remember those plates are VERY sensitive. You can still do the OCVT/MFT right? You should ace that thing if you got that many plates correct. I bet given slightly different lighting you probably would have passed it either way.

It's been awhile since you asked this question so you may have discovered the truth for yourself. Not sure what your AME was talking about. I failed the color vision test with my AME, I knew I was going to since I've been failing them since I was a kid. Functionally I see in color just fine, a few small issues with obscure colors or shades, but I can dress myself without the garanimals tags:). I had already scheduled a FALANT test two days after my flight physical. I passed the FALANT and sent the results to the FAA in Oklahoma City. I received my unrestricted medical certificate in the mail this past weekend. So, it can be done.

Keep in mind you have to do the test every renewal period since 2008...(no more LOE's issued by taking an office based color vision test) Also if you failed one of the tests that require you to look into a machine (keystone, etc) sometimes they are harder than passing the widely used ishihara book tests... Try them all if you can - they are used by AME's and optometrists all over the place - unlike the FALANT which is hard as hell to find these days...

Gene Therapy Lets Monkeys See colors

I just came across this article..

(Sept. 16) - Monkeys once color-blind can now see the world in full color thanks to gene therapy. The results demonstrate the potential for such methods to eventually cure human vision disorders, from color blindness to possibly other conditions leading to full blindness.
The primate patients, named Dalton and Sam, are two adult, male squirrel monkeys that were red-green color-blind since birth — a condition that similarly affects human males more than females. Five months after researchers injected human genes into the monkeys' eyes, the duo could see red as if they had always had this ability.
Since human genes were used and the monkeys' eyes and brains are similar to ours, at least in terms of color vision, the researchers hope the same procedure could work in humans.

Good luck getting that approved by the FAA...

Dan64456 09-17-2009 10:25 AM

If you pass the medical, I don't see what the big deal is? It's basically an injection of a virus with DNA in it... It kinda reprograms your body to start producing the pigments that it wasnt producing before hence the color deficiency... Sounds crazy tho! I read this article this morning...
