Default Back Pain?

Evening all.

I have some problems with my back that I developed about 9 years ago from different sports. When I was 20 I had my back fully MRI'ed and had already lost (deterioration) 3 lumbar discs and had a pinched nerve under my right shoulderblade.

I have been told that we are not allowed to take any RX pain med's.

What do you guys that have back pain do to help deal with it while sitting for so long? I have been thinking about a back brace of sorts that will help pull my shoulders back. Anyone use anything like this?

I eliminated back pain through a combination of stretching, swimming, and core exercises (don't forget reverse abs). Also make sure your pants are not too snug.

But I have no significant back injuries that I know of either. In your case, you had probably better check with your docs or PT people. If you're not working out at all, you would probably benefit from getting back into.

You might be able to take prescription meds if they are non-narcotic, such as prescription-strength motrin, etc.

You are allowed to take RX pain killers with the exception that you cannot take them I believe 72 hours before performing the duties granted under your medical. (I believe) However, you absolutely cannot take any narcotics, RX or not, while exercising your privileges. Call your medical examiner for specifics. I also have had back injuries in the past... best advice from me is to go see a Chiropractor. Works wonders for me now. That and a seat with good lumbar support.

I used to work out 6 days a week in college but have gotten away from it all together. I do need to get back into it but motivation to work out alone is tough!

I have thought about going to a Chiropractor but you hear as many horror stories as you do compliments??? When I am on duty it is 2 week rotations and 5-6 days a week so taking anything is tough. Especially since our DOD contract has us random drug testing nearly 6 time per year, we are not allowed to take much of anything at all and never know when the next test is.

Thanks for all the advice, I will look into each.

Working out might aggravate a back problem, but odds are good that after you work through the kinks you'll feel much better. Work with your medical profession to get back into a routine. As a professional pilot, you might as well get into the habit...your odds of keeping your medical past age 45 are much better if your work out.

This may sound funny, but those inversion tables really work. google teeter hang ups, or you can go to one of those back pain shops that sell all the tables (can't think of the name right now) for around $300. Working out (mainly core exercises) also helps.

I don't doubt it, I spend time hanging from the pull-up bar as part of my stretching routine.

I herniated a disk L5/S1 several years ago. Stretching as well as ab and lower back exercises work. I also bought the Teeter inversion table. I use it a few times a month and it seems to help. If you rely on a brace too much it only serves to weaken the muscle group in the targeted area and may make things worse over time.

Good advice. I was going to use the brace under my flight suit when I was actually in the airplane. I figure that with my harness would help make sure I was sitting straight and not allow me to slouch so much.

I am going to have to look into an inversion table. I think my health insurance covers 12 chiro visits per year so I should be able to come up with some combo of a routine to help.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
