Health Insurance
Not specifically related to being a pilot, but I was wondering if anyone out there has any experience with picking out personal health insurance.
MY 26 year old son is not covered, and has what appears to be a pinched nerve in his back. He is shopping around for personal health insurance, and unfortunately, I have no real experience in this area. (I guess that would actually be fortunate). I was covered by my parents until I joined the service for twenty years and then by FDX since. Any advice, or plugs for particular companies would be appreciated. My fear is that we would choose one that suddenly would not cover back problems, or any other precondition, even though they claim that they do. Also I would add that there is not any documentation of a back problem in his record, but would require attention very soon after obtaining insurance.
Thanks in advance for any insight.

Your son has nothing, is perfectly healthy, and is doing just fine.
Buy the individual health insurance.
Then, go see the doc.
Do NOT lie. That's fraud and insurance companies can do everything from denying coverage while keeping your premiums to putting you in jail.
Do NOT put down a pending health issue on an application either. The time to buy is after any current issues are completely resolved.
Your son might want to see if he's eligible for group coverage at any job he's worked, or possibly COBRA from health insurance at a previous job. If the job ended from sometime last year 'til sometime this year, one can re-apply and get COBRA insurance.
Otherwise, if there are no issues, or one doesn't want to wait, there are many online sources of information for health insurance, and one can purchase health insurance online. Blue Cross seems to be one of the better companies out there, same with Healthnet. I do not touch Kaiser.
Good luck!
