Height and weight (hiring question)
Okay. . . this may seem as a silly question, but here goes.
I'm only 5'5" and maybe 125lbs, wet. Will my height and weight keep me from landing a spot with an airline? Silly question, but I had to ask. I'll eat more, I promise. |
I gues not! Don't worry. I think the airlines just don't want people that are too heavy compared to their size. If you have any problems because of your weight, like if you were very weak or something, that would maybe be a problem. But your case shouldn't be a big deal...:)
GreetZ  |
Alright, good deal. I'm a pretty athletic person (soccer and cross country running experience, etc), but with average upper body strength. I'm on a training regiment now to increase the strength above my waist, so it all could change. . . but I just had to ask. lol

I have a few friends of this stature or smaller who are flying. One is doing just fine at the controls of a C-130.

surreal your dimensions are fine. It's your personality and skills that count in this profession. Heck, they even let 6 foot 7 professional football players into the cockpit, like former Bills tackle Justin Cross.
|
Your stature isn't so small. There's an FO at one of the regionals who is a midget. He probably had to endure a lot of crap, but he succeeded. Most in his situation might have given up or never even tried. When I first heard this, I was glad that someones physical trait didnt get in the way of a dream.
Don't let your size get in the way of flying, especially since it shouldn't hold you back physically at all. |
If you want to gain some mass take this stuff... http://www.nextag.com/isopure-protei...er/search-html
Unlike all the other 10-15g of protein drinks this bad boy has 50g each. Eat like normal and drink one or two a day and stay active. My buddy put on 25lbs of muscle mass in two months doing that lol. |

-LAFF Yes, he does. I noticed him (hard not to) when he was doing IOE in PHX. Seemed like a pretty cool guy. Not sure what he does to see over the glareshield AND reach the pedals, but obviously he has some adaptive system. |
He did appear to be having a good time...

I find most protein powders to be the same as long as its a reputable company. I usually buy from Costco or Sam's club. Creatine will help put on a few pounds. The gym for me is better before work-3 or 4 days a week is fine. In my opinion the best exercises are squats, deadlift, bench, shoulder press, pull -ups (or pull-down) and rows. These hit your larger stronger muscles throw in a few others to keep your body in balance. Try and dedicate one month to a workout regime and you will see a noticeable difference. Also a little protein (20-25 grams) before your workout and protein(40 grams) and 80 grams of carbs right after and some before bed. You could add 8-10 poounds in a month with a little work.

Thanks for that information Rama.

The extra weight might not be good for your joints if you run competitively. The first years of muscle addition are exponential compared to after you reach a certain point. It's quite possible to add 30 pounds of muscle in a short period of time with your low body weight. Also, be prepared for the stretch marks. Cocoa butter or lotion should help there. One final thing, make sure to warm up your joints thoroughly. At our age, it's too hard to stage a comeback after a serious injury. Good luck. J |
Be carefull with those supplements, dont go too crazy. A lot of them have not been tested and their long term effects are still unknown. You should consult your physician before taking creatine. As far as protein goes, the best protein for building muscle can be found naturally in egg whites.
|
I agree with the egg whites, Grandpa. It's easier, however, to carry tuna in an over night bag for a rotation along with a plastic bottle with the condiment of your choice.

Aside from taking supplements ull need to increase the amount of food u eat. I don't mean eat everything in sight, as u dont want to become fat. You need to eat foods like redskin potatoes, yams, cornbread, beans, oatmeal, meats etc. Remember its Diet AND Exercise, you need carbs and protein, not just from supplements. Be sure to start off easy with the exercising, have a session with a personal trainer if you are going to start going to a gym. Majority of weight lifting injuries are sustained from improper form. A proper diet, and having good form is the key to results. If you have any questions, PM me.

Would I have any prob fitting inside a cesna 172? You can easily find out by going to any FBO in the country because if you show the slightest interest in flight lessons, they'll let you sit in anything they have on the flight line... |

Thanks guys, and I actually tried it out when I went to the Seneca's Open House, and got to sit in the cessna 172 and the beechcraft baron. They were perfect for me, although i kinda notice the instrument panel a bit higher on the 172 and my head was very...but very close to the ceiling :p
