Another drunk pilot makes the news (delta?)
#111
I fly for a small Part-135 G-IV operation that has a pilot group of just over 20 pilots. The majority love to get together after a flight and sometimes while on reserve/on call have a few drinks or get hammerd. I am not going to speculate or try to challenge how you 121 guys deal with this problem but I am a eager to see how this shakes out. We all need to stop and think about the consequences and stupidity of these actions.
Regardless if you are flying 121, 135 or 91, it is totally unacceptable behavior and should NOT be tolerated by any of us. I will drop a dime on any idiot that tries to be a smart guy, period! I have tried the other avenues and have raised my concerns with my company and have even gone as far as sending a letter to the owner. Well nothing has made a difference and I think that the next step is turning them in. For any of you who think this is harsh or I am being cruel, just let me clarify that I have a family to raise and I would never ask another pilot to put his career and life in jeoprady over a beverage, and expect the same in return. All this BS about needing help and being nice and helping your union brother is CRAP! Kick these retards to the curb and get people without dependancy issues in the cockpit. I think we all will be much better off, regardless if you fly a 777 or a G-IV.

Are these guys actually accepting work assignments under the influence? If they are, and this is ongoing you might call local PD next time...that will ensure that everything gets "documented" and they get the "help" they need.
Probably not going to make you popular at work though. Tough situation.

Normally I don't peruse posts for rebuttal but a statement like this shows that you do have a definite passion for safety in the profession, which, by the way is admirable and a great attitude to have.
However, you definitely display a LACK of COMPASSION for those persons who may be dealing with this issue. We don't know what is going on in their personal lives which causes them to take such risks. I'm not condoning the behavior. However, if there is an issue or issues that can be resolved and these "retards" as you call them, can be made "whole" again, then I'm all for them getting the help that they need to return to the flight deck with a soundness of mind.

If given a choice between his "LACK OF COMPASSION" or this other guy's LACK OF REGARD FOR THE LIVES OF THE PEOPLE HE FLIES... I think I'll take his lack of compassion.
FAR's + Compassion = Smokey Holes + Dead People
When I have a problem and I need to be "made whole again," that is not a concern of my employer, my crew, or MY REVENUE PASSENGERS! If YOU have a problem, then YOU need to deal with it and until it is dealt with..... YOU are the one who must suffer the consequences of removing yourself from the cockpit until you are fit to return. The second you ENDANGER THE LIVES of others anyone because of your problem simply because you haven't had the mental fortitude to remove yourself from a potentially harmful situation, you deserve to have that problem ruin your life. Everyone makes choices. Choices bare consequences.

It is a service provided to YOU by ALPA that YOU must make the choice to seek out. I don't see ALPA rep's walking around the airport asking pilots how they feel that day and if there is anything going on in their personal lives that they wish to talk about. Everyone makes choices and the pilot must choose to get off the flight deck or not. Nobody else can make these decisions for pilots and if a pilot is going through a problem, it is HIS RESPONSIBILITY ALONE to deal with the problem.
ALPA is a pilot union, a business that you pay money into so that they can protect you from your employer. ALPA IS concerned with you having problems because if you get fired, they loose one set of union dues. It is for this reason that they provide this service that, again, YOU must seek out.
Services, like this one, are there to help anyone but you must take the first step. Because of this, I still see no reason to show compassion toward a pilot who puts my family's lives at risk because of their own problems.

Drinking on call is not a problem...as long as you don't get called.
Are these guys actually accepting work assignments under the influence? If they are, and this is ongoing you might call local PD next time...that will ensure that everything gets "documented" and they get the "help" they need.

Sir, I have probable cause to believe you have operated a (word removed) vehicle while intoxicated, I must now offer you a chemical test, if you refuse the test your driving .........
Defense Attorney: Where was your probable cause officer? Left of center? Speeding? Bright Lights on? Wide turn?
Me: Uh well, they thing is, we were just kinda called.
haha
Seriously though, once showed up to an accident, vehicle into median and a human sized stuffed panda bear (type you win at a carnival) is sitting in the driver's seat. Drunk guy in the passenger seat looks at me and goes "guy drives like an maniacl!"

I don't seem to have this problem because........ I don't drink when on duty/call/reserve! Problem - Solved. Who would have thought.

"simply because you haven't had the mental fortitude" ... Wow... never is it that simple. I don't drink myself, but I have known alcoholics.. it has touched my life... and I do have compassion for their problem. Compassion absolutely has a place in this dicsussion.
There is a definite danger of alcoholics in the cockpit.. obviously... but its a complicated problem.
Do you really feel scared when your family flies? I don't think so. I think you put them on a plane as easily as the next guy, knowing that alcoholism is a problem in the industry. Get down off that pedestal before you hurt yourself.
