Cost of your FAA medical?
What do you pay for a first class medical?
Mine went from $85 to $185 in six months! :( I'm curious what others pay. |
I just ran into the same issue with my AME, he still has the same magazines from 1999, so that can't be the reason for the price increase. I put together a quick poll here:
http://www.airlinepilotforums.com/av...a-medical.html The poll is 2 questions, take the poll and the results update live* here: Average Cost https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...x=pqra7m6ec9c4 *you may have to refresh the page in your browser to see the updates https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...x=ue2jwq3jdtd6 |
Paid $98 without EKG for first class. Ft. McClellan Anniston, AL.
|
Why aren't aviation medical exams covered under health insurance. I asked several AME's offices and they laughed at me. Seems like it's a cash cow that needs to be stopped. We've had to much money taken from us for this job, with no return, already!

$80 without EKG, $110 with. Good guy.
|
First class medical - $35
No joke. |
1st Class, with EKG, $190.
|
It would be helpful if you put your location with the response.

Hopefully, they don't give you the bill DURING the EKG:)
|
What is the EKG for exactly? How come some can get it without one and others have to get one?
|
with EKG - $135, without $95
Baseline EKG must be done at 35, every year after 40 for Class 1 |
Frank Browning at Spruce Creek in FL is 75 for 1st w no EKG. Used to be 60 last year but still pretty good price considering his competition in the same fly-in community charges a lot more. Really nice guy, hope he doesn't retire any time soon.
|
A few years go in the Central California (Fresno, Visalia, Hanford) area it was $100 for the 1st class medical and $85 for the EKG if required. To any military pilots out there getting their 1st Class medical, check with your flight surgeons - AD and Reserves. There are some that are allowed to give FAA medicals.

Military vs FAA Physicals
The Air Force recently (about 3 years ago) changed rules that allows Flight Surgeons to issue 3rd class physicals. Not any good for an airline guy.
SOME (very few) flight surgeons are authorized to be AMEs; ie, can give 1st-Class. A handful more can do 2nds, but not 1st. I asked one of the few who could do 1sts, before he left my base: "Why doesn't the FAA allow military physicals---which are far more stringent than any FAA physical I've ever taken---be allowed as 1st-Class?" He said: "Secret handshake between the FAA and AMEs for job-protection. Like every raw deal in life---politics." |

$100 in Columbia SC for a Class III. Have not shopped around, but perhaps I should
|
Dr. Alper in Detroit is $75 for 1st class no EKG
|
Dr. Davis in Conroe, TX (outside of IAH) $90, he's great!
|
Military physical is now valid as 3rd class. If you're active/reserve/guard flying with valid military flight physical, it counts as a 3rd class.
|
I told mine he was charging too much, $300 with EKG and he laughed.
|
I think my first class is $80-90. Don't remember because my company pays for it.

On the serious tip, total cost - $13, 940.00. That includes:
3 HIMS evaluations 1 non-aviation forensic psychiatric eval 1 non-aviation psychiatric eval 1 non-aviation psychological eval 10 months of I.O.P. 4 months of an Aftercare Program I'm ok with the cost & the timeline. Believe it or not, I took my last and final HIMS eval back in January. Thought that the results of the evals were sent to the Medical Appeals office in DC, but they weren't. I was disappointed b/c the three of us (me, the HIMS neuro-psychologist and the HIMS psychiatrist) had discussed this just before the evals started. I also restated this upon completion of the evals and was assured that they would be sent. It's ok. I realize that I'm not their only client. Besides, timing is everything. I will say this, medically certified or not, it's a win/win situation for me. If certified...cool. I'll pursue my passion. If not, what I've gained and gleaned from the process is immeasurable, invaluable and priceless. No certification could ever touch that!!!! atp |
$123 2nd class in Northwest Indiana.
|
$100 w/o EKG, but it is expensed, so zero for me.

$110 in Annapolis, MD. Use my Health Savings Account.
|
Having prior ADD/ADHD cost my first medical $1,300..... long story :D
|
Just got my 1st class for $90 w/out EKG. It would have been $120 with EKG.
I went to Dr Ceja at JFK advanced medical. They are in building 75 and they will come pick you up from the terminal area and drop you off once you're done. Overall good experience. |
