Default Reapplying for medical after Melanoma

I’m a previous corporate pilot and Im trying to get some insight into the process of reapplying for a medical after cancer. Im 47 was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma. I was diagnosed 11/2018 treated for 3 years and received an all clear 2 years ago. I did not think I would get to this point but now that I am, Im thinking about flying again. From my understanding I have to be clear for 3 years to reapply since it spread to different areas. Has anyone been through this? Did you send in your medical history (diagnoses, CT scans, brain MRI) to the FAA right at the 3 year mark or before? How long did the process take? Was there much of a learning curve flying again? Hard to find a job after being gone so long? Thanks for any help.

As far as the paperwork goes, I’d strongly suggest working with AMAS on that. I had a stroke a few years ago, and have sent AMAS well over 1,000 pages of hospital documents, physical therapy, and a bunch of tests since then. They sort through everything, suggest tests and other stuff that they know the FAA will want, and only send the important stuff off to the FAA, along with detailed cover letters explaining what all they are sending. I think I’m just about to get my first class back, based on what AMAS has told me recently.

I haven’t had to pay for it thanks to ALPA, but I’d still hire them and pay quite a bit for their services. I don’t know what it costs, but I can pretty much guarantee their price is worth it.

I'm glad to hear you have recovered, good luck getting the medical back. It will be a lot of work, but it will be a lot less with AMAS’ help.
