Default pilots living with HIV--new group

Please look for a new group I have created called 'Pilots living with HIV."

I think there are more of us out there than we all might realize, and some of us might want a place to discuss relevant issues with mutual respect and honesty.

If you know someone who is living with HIV and would like frank and honest conversation, please stop by.

Please consider joining this new group.

What's the process like getting your medical as someone who is HIV+?

Must be a pain, but I imagine with all of the new drugs available to treat it it's not as hard as some may imagine...

Default The process

Not as bad as you might think. I first had to deal with all of the personal issues. But as you say, with the outstanding medications available today, you can easily meet the FAA standards. The FAA will want the complete blood test results after you have been on your Meds for a while, to show them that your viral levels of the virus are low. They will also administer a computerized test to you to ensure that you are operating at full mental capacity. They're much like the ones we took at most airlines before we were hired.
You'll continue to have lab tests every three months for the rest of your flying career. For the general population, after a person has stabilized with an undetectable viral load for a period of time, lab tests are reduced in frequency to twice a year.
A person who is compliant with his or her antiretroviral Meds has every reason to expect a normal healthy life.
