Sleep Apnea Special Issuance

Went to get a 1st class in late January, was told I needed a sleep apnea eval. Did a sleep study and was diagnosed. Due to several delays, mainly insurance company and doctors dragging their feet I have to request the additional 30 day extension and will likely miss the deadline to provide the requested info by a few days. Does anyone know what happens then? I'm assuming that I will get some sort of a denial of my medical due to not providing the info. Will I need to start this process again, or just submit the requested info? Future career implications due to a denial of a medical etc?
Again, I have done my absolute best to comply with the deadlines, but unfortunately our healthcare providers run at their own pace. Thanks for any info guys

I think your doc will need to ensure that you are within like 75% compliance with your CPAP machine over the course of about 6 weeks. Once that happens, your doc will sign off, and your ME will sign off too. You'll be fine, but you must be compliant with your CPAP in order to pass 1st Class.

Thanks for the info guys. So my Sleep Specialist told me that I'd sleep with the cpap for 30 days then we would gather the data, status report and submit it. Do you know if i have to go back to my AME? my AME is in Orlando and I now live in PHX. I was under the assumption that it was between myself and medical certification in Oklahoma City at this point. I was told I would have to be compliant with the treatment 75% of the time and sleep with the CPAP for at least 6hrs a night. Shouldn't be an issue, I plan on being 100% compliant since I'm at home anyway.

Greetings, I have a related quesiton. Currently active duty military pilot, already diagnosed with sleep apnea and using a CPAP for about 2 years. Will be transitioning to the airlines next year, and was hoping to knock out my 1st class sometime soon so I can submit my apps. Is the quoted info above accurate, i.e. can I show up to the AME with the info above and get everything submitted at once? Thanks!

yes… call the AME you plan on using and make sure he tells you exactly what docs to bring from your Flight Doc. I'd get it done sooner rather than later… and keep it renewed from now on.

FYI, there is one dental appliance out there that has compliance recording technology that satisfies the FAA. It is new on the market in the last 6-8 months I believe. A lot easier to fit in your flight bag. It can be successful for people with mild to moderate sleep apnea.
