Saying something like “in my opinion Mesa’s hiring standards lets bad pilots in to the pilot group” is a perfectly accurate and fair statement. One the other hand saying “ Well.. since he probably never had a DUI or got fired he doesn’t ha e to“ implies ALL Mesa pilots are like that and that’s bull****.
And I don't think that all Mesa guys are like that, I know some pretty decent guys there. But yes, in my eyes, hiring people like the subject we're talking about does raise eyebrows on who else they have hired with similar backgrounds and similar personality traits that make him 100% ineligible to control anything heavier than a lawnmower.

TYS
Long time reader here...
What are the chances of holding TYS on reserve right out of training (or holding a TYS line)? Also have about 2,000 Turbojet PIC (not 121 so probably doesnt matter). About how long to make Captain @ TYS.
Thanks for any replies.

You could probably get TYS right out of training, or shortly after. You'll be sitting reserve as an FO almost a year. For Captain it's a little over 2 years for short call reserve. To hold a line as a Captain will take almost 4 years. Did I mention that our reserve rules SUCK! Being a line holder and a reserve pilot are 2 different things. As a line holder life ain't too bad. On reserve you're not even treated like a human being. Many of our FO's are dropping down to 65 hours a month to avoid the forced upgrade. Your experience with jet time will help you out, but throw all your part 91/135 habits out. 121 is altogether different. Good luck.

Too many uncertainties to predict when and how they will change ... but my bet is that they get longer. Let's say you assume the average pilot stays at PSA for 6 years (which would reflect an AMAZING hiring market if sustained long term). And assume the company keeps 1/3 of the group on reserve. Then you would expect a year on reserve.
There's no way an airline can have only a few months of reserve without rapid growth or incredible attrition.

I did some math and the average time overall company wide to hold a round 1 line as an FO is 11.33 months. About a year ago it was only about 6 or 7 months. March data to April data the average time increased by 2 weeks, which is the biggest increase I’ve seen from one month to the next.
