If you want to fly a lot on reserve, then you usually have to find an understaffed airline.

If you can find an understaffed airline that both a) is hiring and b) remains understaffed, though, then there's probably a reason for that.

Pretty much, PSA is essentially overstaffed but insist on having about half the company on reserve.

Plus in my experience when you do get used on reserve you get a double/triple deadhead to work one leg to an overnight then Deadhead around the next day to do it again.

My IOE instructor said I should definitely log deadheads, since I'll get more of those. I'll have my time likety-split! /s

New reserve rules are going to significantly change the dynamics of who gets reserve and how much they fly.

Particularly if you're in an outstation vs. a hub.

Essentially it minimizes how effective first/last out preferences are. For example you can be the most Senior last out pilot on reserve, but if a two day trip pops up and you're the only one with exactly two days available then you get it even if there are a dozen pilots junior to you with more days of reserve remaining.

If hired in the next couple months how soon could one hold reserve at TYS?

Currently it’s at 11.2 months. If you started tomorrow I would guess 16-18 months. I don’t know how much more the company plans to grow pilot wise, but if the current pace holds steady and you don’t start for another few months it could be 18-24 months of reserve.
