New hire info
 

Hey everyone. I've been reading all the different threads and I thought I'd start a new one to centralize the information.

As a new hire:
. what base should I expect?

. I understand reserves are long, but how long right now, and how much do you fly while on reserve?.

. How many hours can you expect to fly first year?.


Trying to decide where to go and PSA now included after those rates went up.

ORF, DAY, or CVG. A year, 2-400 hrs. That’s my guess without looking at any data.

Quick add on question for PSA pilots on the line. Given PSAs reserve rules would you still drive 2 hours to sit reserve over doing a two leg commute to get a line sooner?

The reserve situation has changed month to month over the last 24 months that I’ve watched it. Barring substantial change (... and that never happens, right) new hires are probably looking at over a year of reserve at all bases. 20-40 hours/month is reasonable to optimistic. I’d say 20 average.

The junior (ie non-clt) bases have moved pretty closely together for reserve times. There’s not a reliably super junior base you can take to get a line quick.

2 leg commutes are badddddddddd.

2 leg commutes are a bad time. Trust me.

Don’t 2 leg. It’s pure misery. Driving to work makes life a lot simpler.

I’d drive for sure. Drive up in the morning, hangout. You get a parking pass for your base, so if you get used doesn’t cost you anything more than gas. If you don’t, you can just drive home again. Takes a few extra hours but it’s better than worrying about getting a seat , potentially exceeding the allowance for hotels, and losing a day or two off every trip making the commute if it isn’t commutable (I.e 80% of ORF trips)

I assumed driving two hours to sit reserve would be less stressful than a two leg commute for a line. I can drive to CHA to do a one leg to CLT or drive to TYS in under two hours easily from home. I also can drive ATL in about 70ish minutes depending on traffic through the city.

Keep in mind reserve times are based on date of hire. So by the time you finish training (3 months give or take), you’ll only be on short call for a few months followed by long call then a build up line. It’s not straight short call for an entire year.
