Default PTOs/unpaid days off.

Hi!
I have a question about days off. I was thinking about applying to the regionals pretty soon ( I am around 1400hrs right now). I am thinking about PSA, heard they have really good scheduling system there (comparing to other regionals). Me and my wife can move to any base. She works as a CFI so bigger cities with some flight schools around would be great.
1. Is it even possible to take unpaid time off? say I need about one month off around July (important family event.). I guess something called "paternity leave" doesn't exist in this country?
Thank you!

Our system is "good" for line holders, but not for reserves.

You can't take time off without using vacation, calling out sick, taking FMLA, or the occasional Personal paid or unpaid day. We get three paid "emergency" days per year.

None of those things will get you a whole month off, but you might be able to squeeze out a week off for a specific event that has been in the works for 9 months.

Edit: If you think you want a class date with PSA you need to go ahead and apply if you're at 1400 hours.

It sounds like your question is "Can I take time off after my kid is born"

The answer to that is yes. FMLA will give you up to 12 weeks unpaid leave, no issues.

Thanks for jumping in, I wasn't sure if a spouse giving birth qualified for FMLA or not.

Do you remember how long it is before new hires can get health insurance through the company? I thought it was 90 days, but I don't use the company health insurance so I don't remember.

When I was a F/A, back when FMLA was invented, not only did you have to be employed the previous 12 months, but must also have been paid 960 credit hours, in the previous 12 months to qualify. Might want to find out if any updated Flight Time Requirements still apply for it as well.

Yea, that's pretty important detail. Don't get me wrong, but when I discovered there is no paid maternity/paternity leave in US, I was a little bit shocked! but it is what it is .

Anyway, is there any other way I can get this month off? Can I negotiate something like this during my interview? Finally, it's one time thing and it's UNPAID, I belive company doesn't lose a lot of money on that.

Thank you all for your help.

Not sure what would happen in your case with being there less than a year, but the chief pilots have always been amazing whenever I had issues like when my wife’s water broke a month early, or when she was in a car accident and I was on a trip. Of course I had been here a year already but you may want to speak with a recruiter or ask about that during the interview. Worst case? Start after the baby is born. Yes that first month is VERY difficult and congrats

12 months is the legal minimum. The company may do something different in practice.
