As a personal friend related to me who did the civilian route: Flight Instruction to Ck hauler to Regional to Major.
You have the most fun at the regional level. After that it's like the old saw "hours and hours of boredom punctuated with moments of sheer terror."
I would add that this career is what you make of it. For me it was not investing all my time in that work environment but having several interests outside of aviation that made this career a boon rather than a bust.

Exactly. Everyone was excited to see it leave, and I cautioned them that it meant our fleet was smaller and that’s not good for the pilot group. I’ll gladly fly it single pack and no APU if it meansns keeping my or one of my peers jobs.

It was one thing when aircraft were replacing it but the straight retirement of any fleet isn’t good.
