Maybe I'd be at a mainline

It's good that you brought this up actually. Before I address this let me say I am happy at PSA. They treat me well work rules are fair when compared to other regionals and upgrade was fast. I won't address pay(more specifically being paid correctly) or other contract issues this is just to say that I am not all doom and gloom. I like it here.

Now that we have that out of the way let's address your question about the interview/flow. This was one of the hardest things for me when deciding to work for PSA. The problem is that I really want to work for American. It is without a doubt my first choice of career airline. Problem is that the pref interview as it stands now means I pretty much eliminate that as a reality. If the intention was to make me want to work for PSA because I would go to American eventually they got it all wrong. You see I will be competitive in about 18 months for majors and LCC's but I have absolutely zero chance of working for American for about 8 years. By working here I needed to accept how difficult it was going to make it for me to get to American. A new hire today would have 20 years to wait based on no attrition. While others have stated there is a lot of attrition on the FO side there is nearly none where it matters meaning from the top of the list. With the exception of the 4 per month to mainline I believe our captain attrition in the last 12 months is single digits! Yes I understand this will pick up but a new hire today would be over a decade to mainline IF they don't stop hiring for the next ten years. There is a lot of talk that the numbers that will be going to mainline is going to increase, however there is also a lot of talk that Bigfoot is real. Until it's in writing you NEED to anticipate things based on the current contract. And to make matters worse, it's an interview not a flow? I don't care that "most" have been taken. It is an insult that you would have to work for a decade just to have a chance to beg for a job with the people that have been funding your paycheck the whole time especially when both of the other wholly owned airlines have a real flow. At any point in time they can start turning people down from the interviews. Sure they will take as many as they can that are on 15 yr longevity pay but they could stop at any time. Just imagine working for ten years just to have American say, "sorry not interested." Interview vs flow is insulting.

So, in conclusion if your sole goal is to work for American, look somewhere other than PSA. Will things change? I hope so. I would love to get an, "I told ya so" in a few months when the numbers increase to 10-12 a month, but until it's in writing and the seniority numbers are issued PSA is a sure way to be blocked from working at American.

I mean... I'm going to PSA because it has the easiest commutable base from where I live, and I looked for months around my area and couldn't find a single job worth working at (it's a Florida thing). A preferential interview never mattered to me. My dream isn't to work for one of the majors specifically. My dream is to get paid a livable wage to fly and put food on the table. If that's American, Southwest, Emirates, a pt91 company, etc... I don't care. Flying is flying. This is what I do to support the other things I enjoy about my life. Flying isn't my whole life.

Did you upgrade right at 10 months with exactly 1000 121 hours (500 from previous airline.)?

Seems to me, Chris, if AA does not increase their PSA pref. interview, you'll have a better/quicker shot at eventually going to American if you first moved to Spirit, JB, Frontier, Virgin America, Delta, or United. If I were you, I'd keep the pref. interview in your back pocket, as "plan B".

Competitive in 18 months, I don't think you mean competitive.

About to go to class soon for PSA and was thinking about bases. I eventually will be living in Nashville (once I can pickup a line). Would commuting be better driving almost 3 hours each way to Knoxville (TYS) or fly to Charlotte (CLT)? Their are no flights operated between Nashville and Knoxville, but Charlotte has 8 or so flights a day between Nashville.

Never done the whole commuting thing, so not sure what is a better option. Obviously with Knoxville, I wouldn't have an issue of worrying if I will make any sort of flight in time to get to work, though I will also be paying for the 6 hour round trip drive every week or so.

One thing you could consider as far as flying and commuting is it might actually take an hour to leave your base crashpad or home, drive to airport, park, shuttle bus from parking lot, go through security, board the plane and then leave.

A three hour drive from Nashville to Knoxville might not be so bad. No second car, no apartments or crashpads.

does anyone know about the family pass? does it count for parents including step parents if they are legally remarried?
