The only debate you should have is with yourself. If it is more functional for you to have a backpack, then do it. It won't be any worse then the folks with the tailgating cooler strapped on along with all the other crap we have to carry around. Then there are the FA's with their setups...oh boy...

I fly for Delta. I have a backpack with my surface in it, a headset, spare battery, plethora of chargers and some snacks usually.

I have never seen a pilot wearing a backpack in the terminal. I have seen several with backpacks on their j-hooks, and I don't (nor do I know) anyone who has issue with a pilot who has a backpack on his or her j-hook.

The sports team lanyards are way more unprofessional IMHO than any backpack stuck on your carry-on. It'll make half of the passengers want to punch you in the face if they don't like your team. Nothing compared to having the back pack. Nobody but other pilots care about whether you have a backpack or a brightline bag.

Then why do you have a backpack?

(On a side note "unprofessional" gets used most by those who can't even spell it)

Default Backpack alternatives?

So, I'm one of those guys that currently carries a backpack. I can put everything I need in it and it meets the criteria for a "personal item" when I have to airline. I'm not an airline guy, but I'm leaning that way.

What do guys use in addition to their roller board? What do you carry into the cockpit? Not sure if I will need to have my own headset and I assume I will have tablet for an EFB, but I usually (still!) carry a personal laptop. If I have to commute on one of those micro planes that can't fit a regular carry on in the overhead, I want to be able to keep my laptop in my personal item.

Thanks

All that stuff, plus a lot more, will fit in a standard size backpack. I carry one and so does 90% of my fellow pilots at our major airline.

Only whiny regional pilots who are trying to "out-professional" each other care about such silly things as whether or not you carry a backpack.

Nope. Backpacks are prohibited.

What airline? It does no good to say they are prohibited without knowing what airline.

Looking at your post history, you seem to be at Envoy.

They are prohibited at PDT too, along with unapproved food coolers (whatever that means), but that hasn't stopped anyone from carrying one.
