Default Carry a backpack? What kind? Unprofessional?

I've Been carrying a backpack for some time now instead of a "pilot bag" some companies frown upon it. Way more functional than any other carry on type bag. Black tom bihn synapse 25 with a kifaru stiffener plate. Does your airline allow backpacks?

It's up there with long sleeves-no jacket, bag tassels, x-mas epaulettes, and cowboy boots.

You can wear it, but you're gonna look silly

Most airlines will not allow backpacks.Look in your manual under uniforms or appearance .If the wrong person notices it ,you can be written up for it,I've seen it happen .
In addition, it just looks so childish and unprofessional to see a 121 line Pilot with a backpack. What type of image do you want to portray to the public??

Unprofessional. Save it for your days off.

In my experience it is frowned upon at the regional level, and accepted at the major level. In my regional days, backpacks were specifically forbidden by our FOM and most guys would give you flack about being silly and unprofessional for carrying one. At my current carrier (with probably one of the more stricter dress codes out there), backpacks are allowed per the FOM, people carry them, and nobody judges you if you choose to carry it. Check your FOM (or wherever the dress code is spelled out) and then choose accordingly.

If you're carrying it on your back then it looks silly. If it is strapped to your roller bag or on the J hook then it should be fine. Again like everyone else said, check the FOM. I used a backpack which was strapped to my roller bag for years and no one said a peep to me and it wasn't approved in our FOM.

So a backpack is unprofessional but half of you are walking around with sports team lanyards and stickers all over your roller board like 12 year old.

Not only allows it, but my airline actually issues free backpacks as one the the available options for carrying the company provided EFK. I'd estimate that 90% of the pilot group uses backpacks in addition to their standard luggage.

What's childish and unprofessional is the young regional pilot wearing a hat two sizes too big that covers the top half of his ears.
