Define "unqualified".

There are tens of thousands of ATP rated people not currently at an airline.

Are those 10's of thousands with ATP's that are not at airlines from the same stats that say there isn't a pilot shortage? Most of those guys have been flying around the patten an hour at a time over 20 years and would never hack it in an airline training program.

You don't get an ATP if you're a $100 hamburger guy. That just isn't a thing.

Incorrect. I gave bfr's to lots of people in Florida who held atp ratings. They were generally not at all interested in the airline though.

Everyone has a price. The more lucrative the airline pilot career, the more pilots' price is met. And we don't know who would hack it or not. The fact still remains that thousands of pilots have earned their ATP in the couple years since the rule took effect. There's more new ATPs since then than what all airlines have hired in the same amount of time!

This wasn't an issue 15 years ago before pilot wages, work rules, retirement, etc were all very lucrative. Once they were gutted, people stopped choosing it as a career. The renewed improvements are starting to help but it's nowhere close, when adjusted for inflation, where it was pre 911.

I stand corrected. Don't see too many people, however, getting a $1000 check for literally nothing.

In the past it wasn't a $1000 checkride. Back when twins weren't $250-$350/hour to rent, and insurance on a light twin wasn't cost-prohibitive to have them as rental aircraft and in flight clubs.

I had two "students" get their ATPs before the new rules went into effect... they just wanted their ticket to say Airline Transport Pilot. A doctor and a lawyer.

Yeah, they're called retired airline pilots. Oh, and maybe a few corporate guys.

They track active vs retired by using age. If you are over 65, you aren't counted in the numbers. Yes, some retire before but that doesn't account for the thousands of new ATPs.
