Electronic logbooks
 

Hi all-

I'm an F/O for a regional, thinking of upgrading soon, and I've let my logbook lapse for the last 5 years. Now I want to catch up...so I need opinions please. Should I move from paper to electronic, and if so, what electronic logbook do you like and why? Hoping to get to a major one day...thanks!

I am not in the airline world (YET), but I maintain both paper and electronic logbook.

I use Logbook Pro and I like it because it is easy and looks very similar to the paper logbook I had been using. There are also customizable enteries and you can see a running total at the buttom of the screen, which is also customizable. I have mine set for 90days/180days/365days.

I would recomend electronic, mine is outdated, but some of the new ones allow you to upload your company data into the e-logbook...obvious time-saver.

I also keep the paper logbook for endorsements and the odd 91 flight. I do a monthly total of my 121 flying (the e-logbook does it for me) and make one line entry in the paper book with each monthly 121 totals.

I support electronic as it's easy to tally times. However a paper one is better for everything else. I just base that on that I was going to print mine out and it was 71pages :eek: It's nice to have the hardback version.

The electronic logbooks make life very easy and most even have a feature that allows you to print it out in the format of an old fashion logbook. I would keep both, at an interview (later in life if you choose to) or at your upgrade/type rides you will need to show paper logbooks. I would print one out and sign each page then stow it in the freezer or some other fun location, just joking. Oh, and one logbook I would recommend, http://www.myonlinelogbook.com/

$36 pr year would add up in the long run. Is it better than logbook pro?

Thanks all for the info. I used to make daily paper logbook entries, but monthly seems to be the way a lot of guys do it now. Anyway, I've got a lot of work ahead!

I use Logbook Pro for my main time keeping and APDL as my little red/black book for the trips that I do on my palm. You have to check these out. So far, APDL is a little harder to use than I thought it would be, but I'm getting the hang of it. There are a lot of "how to" and learning videos provided by NC Software (the makers of both the aforementioned products) which help out a lot. I just have to get around to viewing some of them sometime. It's awesome too how you can print them out in Jeppesen style, etc. Check it out.

I keep a paper one of both the little red/black book and my total times in another.


www.logshare.com is a free online one. pretty basic but it works well.

Didn't I hear that some regionals and possible airlines have a way to download your flights to logbook pro? I can't remember who was talking about it. Do the regionals keep track of your flights and times for you on some inhouse program?

They all have a computer system to track crew scheduling and duty times. It contains your schedule, with planned times. This schedule is updated within minutes as to the actual times of the flight, so if you download it at the end of a trip it SHOULD be accurate (unless you work at mesa). All you have to do is correct any errors and add in your night, IMC, and landings.
