Hiring????
#2
Since I returned from Europe there has been consistent hiring at the so-called "regional" airlines non-stop. And hiring at the legacy and other operators of larger aircraft has increased.
Barring some sort of unforeseen circumstance, I would expect it to continue for years to come.
Depends upon:
- Age 65
- possible terror attack against aviation
- fuel prices going through the roof
- an economic recession/depression
As long as people continue to travel, there will be a need for pilots. Whether or not it is a good career choice is another question altogether.
I would do something different if I were starting over today.

The industry is expected to grow at about 3.5% per year for domestic and 4.7% per year for int'l through 2025. I'd read that there is not enough capacity in the current ATC system to handle the growth after 2013. Like I said... Just what I read.

A long time, at the regionals, at least. I think things are going to level a bit at the majors here in a couple years, then go completely crazy, due to retirements and increased flying among the general public...a complete hunch, no evidence to support that.

Everyone will be guessing at that one. This industry has always had cyclical movments in pilot hiring. Up and Down, thats the way it is. Read "flying the line I and II. These books give some insight into how and why the airlines have the cycles you see.
Good Luck

man you are so off its not funny. Things may go in cycles for each airline, but there is definantly not a slow down in hiring. We cant hire enough. We have 3 sims running 24 hours a day and just secured some more so we can increase our training out put. I remember a year or so ago (oct. of 05)skywest said they were over staffed and they stopped hiring people, and even stopped the entire interview process. then 5 months later they couldn't hire enough. Same happened here at pinnacle. got hired here a little more than a year and a half ago and they couldn't hire fast enough. then the summer came and all the sudden we were overstaffed and had to many pilots,,, they stopped interviewing and hiring, then low and behold we cant hire enough!!!! its all in cycles for everyone but i can assure you that there will be a pilot shortage very soon.
