Compass hiring update
Just got some additional info about Compass...
Latest word is that only a handul of NWA furloughees have accepted positions at Compass. These pilots will be in the first class of "new hire line pilots" for the E170. Also have heard that NWA (mainline) wants to change the hiring practices for Compass since the flow through pilots to NWA wouldn't need an interview at mainline prior to being placed in class (as currently written). Sounds like mainline wants Compass applicants to go to MSP for a "Captains' Panel" interview, a sim ride in the NWA 727 sim, and a company physical. The management at Compass is resisting the latest changes from what I hear. (There is a lot of discussion about how flying a 727 sim with steam gauges helps to evaluate pilots who have glass experience and will be flying all glass aircraft). |
Because if they come to NWA they will be flying the DC-9.

Perhaps, but I imagine that most Compass applicants (at least initially) will have some experience with the CRJ/ERJ or other glass regional aircraft. In these cases, just like a DC-9 driver who has flown the 9 for years is all @$$es and elbows when they go to the airbus simulator, tossing a guy/gal that has years of EFIS experience into steam gauges won't be a good indicator of their ability as a pilot, particularly for employment at Compass.
Besides the DC-9's are going to be around forever. Seems to me like things are in the works to replace them with E190's here before too long. |

The flight director in the PFD display in these aircraft is quite different from what most are used to. These aircraft use both a dual cue and single cue flight director, depending on phase of flight. A good instrument crosscheck that is based on raw data indications is a huge benefit in flying the 170/190 on instruments. |
