CASM is much better with bigger airplanes. Smaller airplanes can only compete on routes which are too thin to fill a bigger plane.
This works on the mainland because there are many small towns which are too far to drive from bigger airports. Not so much on the islands, Hawaiian can compete pretty much everywhere. You can also drive (ferries).

But it's all said and done. About 70 pilots (including 420 total employees) will be looking for new jobs. Please help out if you run across a WP pilot.

Hawaiian would match any Island Air route price. Even if it was for free. The Q400 and prior Dash models were perfect for the islands.... if the seats could be filled on a consistent basis. HAL could take losses on inter-island flying while making bank on their widebody domestic and international flying.

This from the "Hawaiian" thread:
In light of Island Air shutting down operations tonight, Hawaiian has told the Island Air MEC that the application window will be open again specifically for affected Island Air pilots wishing to seek employment at HAL (that didn't apply during the recent October window). Details like when/how/etc have yet to be announced. We were also informed of a general HAL open house on 11/18 at Corporate.

Absolutley sickening.
No access to 401(k) accounts? Should be ripping it out of those so called owners and managers pockets.
