Default Quicker to regional vs. Cost

Looking at getting on at a WO. Have a few options on timing so was curious.

How much $ would you be willing to spend to get hired a month earlier? Two?

Have a flying job but have an option to expedite getting to the 1500 sooner.

So what would you value a month earlier for seniority, flow, and "real" pay to be worth?

Straight math wise a month earlier makes it 1-2K more automatically in pay, so that amount isn't as issue. Talking more of the 3-15K range.

So what do you think?

Take the money you'll spend now, apply a resonable return rate through you retirement date, and that is opportunity cost of spending that money now. Assume you'll make at least $350k at retirement, and you can decide which is more advantageous.

This does not of course account for career risk, of the other less tangible benefits of seniority.

Thanks! ROI turns out to be about the same as a month pay, so looking like would break even on that front

I would spend zero dollars to get to my mins quicker if it only meant a month or two. What's the rush if you are already getting your time paid for, are you 60 or something?

At the time when I was a new hire, I would have said just to wait.

Right now, I would pay $5000 in cash to move up 2 months in seniority on the list. Even though I have been with my AA WO for over 3 years now, I would still be over 60 number more senior if I were hired 2 months earlier. That would mean earlier flow. We were hiring 60+ a month when I was hired (much like today) and you can have up to 100 people junior to you on the seniority list when you finish training.

But, I would not recommend spending money to get to an airline earlier. You never know, it may not pay off. It would be a gamble.

I wouldn’t stress over two moths earlier if it’ll put a financial strain on you. You’re allowed to apply to the WOs prior to making minimums. Some like Piedmont is filling classes 4-5 months out from interview dates so you could interview early and have a class date match up to when you’ll meet mins.

My main consideration points in considering whether to do so areare:

Getting family moved and into schools sooner for next year before wait listed starts filling up

Getting ahead of the influx of pilots when the atp mins change

Getting seniority established asap in order to get to base sooner

Current gig isn't a big fan of people not upgrading and I may end up needing to supplement hours anyhow

$ wise, it'd take some rearranging but not necessarily cause any financial strain
