Regional New Hire Training- How Long?
 

I am trying to make a career change into aviation. I have a current career with a pretty flexible schedule and over 3 months of vacation hours banked. I can also trade shifts to have others cover for me. I am about a year and a half away from ATP minimums. I am just trying to prepare as much as possible to merge careers.

How long is the new hire training, type rating, and any other training up until I would be on a reserve schedule? 6 weeks? 6 months ? Is it M-F 9 to 5? Can I go home on weekends? I know each company will be different, but I am leaning towards a company with west coast bases as I will be comuting from LAS. Compass, Skywest, Mesa, or Horizon training would be a good example, but any regional will work.

Air Wisconsin was 6 weeks of ATP/Indic/Systems, a week sit at home, then a week of CPT, a week at home, and 2-3 weeks of sims with some breaks in between depending on your progression. We had guys done with the type ride in a little as 8 weeks from starting class (already had ATP, no additional sims required) to as long as 12 weeks (no ATP to start, additional sim periods required).

After your type ride and depending on the airline, 2-4 trips of IOE (2-4 more weeks) before you are on the line.

Took me just under 3 months from indoc to being on the line at Envoy. That included a slow down over thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years etc

I think some people take longer depending on training department schedulers etc

I was right at 90 days with Mesa from day 1 till IOE complete in the CRJ. Ymmv.
