You must have forgotten that part about how the government essentially got in bed with the railroad companies and forced the taxpayers to pay for the rails and let the railroad companies take the profit.
They do the same with the airports.
It's called socialism.
And yes, air travel would be much better without the government involved.

It would be socialism if the govt owned the rails, the land, and the railroad companies themselves.

One thought to keep in mind:
Rail is operating near capacity. Only so many locomotives and only so much track. Basically the demand for transportation of goods is very high. Give or take, most if not all class I railroads are operating near capacity. I believe it was the 90s shortly after acquisition of a smaller road, that UP ran into problems. Major rains removed (and kept removing) a lot of track infrastructure. This put them way over capacity. Bad things began to happen.
Basically I believe this is why trucking is so huge.
Golly, imagine what would happen to airspace congestion (capacity) if the regionals didn’t exist
