Customs fine for apple
 

Is she stupid or was customs being jerks? I think it's made pretty clear that you can't bring fruit in to the country.

Yes, you have to declare fruit and veggies.

I always declare, and NUMEROUS times have been allowed to keep them because

1) I declared it.
2) They believed me when I said I brought it from home when I started the trip.

I don't think she was stupid, she just didn't pay attention. When subjecting oneself to any sort of federal scrutiny, one should pay attention.

There was a flight attendant who was fined for having a avocado. She did declare she had fruit (apples) but failed to list the avocado as she forgot.

Coincidently, she also stated the CBP agents were rude and demeaning to her, even as someone who was in uniform.

Federal agents being rude and demeaning? I'm absolutely shocked.

Lots of trouble can be avoided by keeping this in mind. ;)

I knew a pilot who got fined for an old orange in his flight bag that he obviously forgot about. I've also talked to a guy that said they would just let him throw them away and that was the end of it. So I guess it depends on which person you get and what kind of day they are having. I am paranoid any time I am being subjected to inspection by CBP. I even double and triple check my car before I drive in to Canada up here in Detroit. If they feel like ruining your day they have the power to do it. I would rather just not give them the opportunity.

Some of it can be silly. I go through US customs in Canada. I can then buy something on the other side of customs and take it with me to the US.
One time we were on a ground stop at YYZ. Well, we went past the point where we had to go through customs. Saw a Timmy Horton's and decided to grab a doughnut and have it with some Starbucks which is on the other side. I wasn't hiding it, but forgot about declaring it. Customs guy made me eat it. Of course they had similar doughnuts (though NOT Timmy's), at Starbucks.:rolleyes:
