Old school or not keep in mind hand flying can put a lot of extra work on the PM. Might not be a good idea during high task situations.

Haha this.

I was PM from DEN-COS and the PF hand flew the whole way, which I didn’t mind but he didn’t give me a heads up and it was a lot of work in 12 minutes for me. If I’m going to handfly a short route like that, I ask the other pilot if he is ok with the workload.

+1.

I had a clueless Capt decide to hand fly into EWR in IMC (near mins) starting on base leg, with no coordination. Tripled my workload in the busiest airspace in the country, just to prove what a "great" pilot he was.

Same thing happened to me. Turned off AP and FD in cruise prior to starting decent into DFW...Needless to say my workload was insane and I'll tell you what, it was super sloppy. On the ground, he apologized. I told him nothing wrong with hand flying, but maybe leave the FD on next time until you are set up for the visual. We survived with no paper work. Well there would have been had I not called the field when I realized he shot past the assigned base heading by 30 degrees. Good times.

Good god. Sounds like a lot of extra stress for nothing. To the point, our airline only has very limited rules as to when we have to hand fly so it really comes down to the pilots. I usually hand fly to about 8-10k on departures and shortly after being cleared onto the ils course. This is all assuming that we had a good controller that hasn’t left is high, fast or too close. In those cases I find the 75 struggles and needs manual attention.

Auto throttles come off about 10-15% of the time in final for currency.

Impress me with your beer drinking, not your hand flying.

Yeah seriously some guys think they spent all that time and money designing the automation to make life more difficult on you.

Serious question, what kind of workload on short legs? I used to fly FLL-PBI manually in a 757. I don't remember that being difficult provided you set up the approach prior to departure.
