All of these planes currently being delivered with 76 seats can only have 76 seats in them not because of scope but because that particular model was limited to 76 seats by Embraer. It would require a recertification of the individual aircraft to install more than 76 seats. A plane can be changed once delivered, but it will cost money to do so. The number of planes delivered at 76 seats far outweighs the number delivered over 76 seats.
Also a 70 seat 175 is not that inefficient. Our E170's and 175's have the same exact engines even though our 170's are slightly lighter. Even though the 175 is slightly heavier, it has a more efficient wing than what the 170 does. The 170 is not in production, so the only option is the 175SC.
Even if United would order a new SNB, that would still open up addition UAX frames, so they might still keep these planes at 70 seats and order more 76 seaters or they could keep the UAX fleet number flat and add the extra seats. My guess is they would do the former.

Exactly and it was very little money per airframe. The same applies to the E175.

Not quite. We are being told if we can get a contract done quickly we will get them. Used in the past, the difference this time is a specific contract (UAL), was mentioned. Also, I think management is panicking as attrition has gone off the charts. Fifty or so pilots hired away last week alone. I think it is finally dawning on them that this is not 2012.

But, United hasn’t said anything to any of its other partners who bid yet —- particularly to GoJet whom is rumored as to losing the 700’s.
